As soon as I learned what a “Top Tier” was (and after I finished my much needed laugh) I immediately thought of Game of Thrones. There are some hilarious, uncanny comparisons. See if you can find any similarities on your campus!
Whether your motto is "Winter is Coming" or "A Lannister always pays his debts" and you begin to allow yourself to play the "Game of Tiers," you will soon find out which one of these categories you fit into:Â
House Lannister:  These are your self-proclaimed “Top Tier” houses, the ones that sit on the Iron Throne, if you will. They may have gotten here by rightfully deserving it, (let’s call these people the Tyrions). They may have gotten here by other means. Honestly, nobody even knows how they got there to begin with—it’s more of a mystery than who John Snow’s father actually is. Either way, they cling onto the coveted title that everyone always strives for, and they won’t let it go willingly. However, if you do something to support them such as attending one of their events, be sure to see a large group of them return the favor for you in the near future. After all, a Lannister always pays his debts.
House Targaryen: These people are in the sororities and fraternities that are just so cool they might as well have dragons for pets. They should be the top houses, but something always gets in the way. They are passionate about their communities and doing what is right. They protect their own and support their loved ones. They are crazy about their philanthropies and, like Daenerys, care about the people surrounding them. They will go around the community volunteering and donating for a better world.Â
House Stark: These houses may have taken a beating in recent times, being in the “lower tier” now, but once they were the most coveted houses during rush on campus. They have some new members who have the potential to bring these houses back to their glory days, though. Much like Bran, Arya and Sansa. these chapters have special people who are ready to fight for their house and make sure it stays on campus because they love their brotherhood and sisterhood that much. They inspire loyalty wherever they go (so watch out if they own a dog). They aren’t out for the Top Tier, they never wanted to be there, they just want to make their house is what it deserves to be and to show everyone else how extraordinary they are. These will be the houses that will try their hardest during recruitment, working tirelessly to share their love with the next pledge class.Â
House Tyrell: These are the houses that are in the “middle tier.” They are a great group of people and you will rarely find somebody who has a problem with them (unless they fit in the Lannister category) but they aren’t quite at the top. They made their way up from the lower tiers recently, and it wasn’t a quick process. They always seem to have a clever trick up their sleeve, and because they are so close and have made it so far, they are out for the Top Tiers. Unlike Margorie, however, they don’t need to marry a psychopath to get there (thank you, Purple Wedding). Some see them as a threat to their own status, like Cersei, but they can’t do much about it because there is no denying they deserve to be there, too.Â
House Baratheon: Ah, the Baratheon houses. Much like Stannis, these fraternity boys get a little too caught up in hot women with red hair to focus on their brotherhood and their image. Nobody really knows if they are coming or going, but suddenly they do something that surprises everyone (like showing up to defend the Night’s Watch). They are out for the Top Tier; they just want to go about a different way of doing it.Â
The Night’s Watch: This fraternity may be the land of misfits, but they are the nicest guys you will ever meet. Maybe their house is a little ways away from campus and nobody hears about them throwing parties, but their brotherhood is the best and strongest it can possibly be. They hold up their founders’ traditions and are an example for all of Greek Life, maybe they just don’t get the attention and recognition they deserve. At least these guys can date, unlike The Night’s Watch (unless you’re John Snow, of course). Crows before hoes, brotha!Â
The Faceless Men: These are the men and women that perhaps don’t wear their letters everywhere they go; they don’t see it as their only identity. They have unique personalities in every house because they can get along with whomever they meet. These are your members in groups like Order of Omega, PanHellenic Council, and Greek Week committee, who help and are aware of the whole Greek and Non-Greek Community rather than just themselves. These are the people who will attend Greek Week events and socialize with everyone, not just in their own chapter. They may not have a cool saying, but at least The Faceless Men do (Valar Morghulis, am I right?). These are your people who don’t get caught up in the Game of Tiers.Â
