Coming home for break and seeing relatives I heard the same basic questions, "How's school?" "How are your classes?" or "What's your major again?" But the scariest one came after the easy ones.
"What do you plan on doing with that?"
Every time it takes me by surprise I'm only a sophomore, it feels like freshmen year just started yesterday. I know what I love to do and why I choose my major but my plans for after school?! I have no idea.
Coming back to campus it seemed that a lot of my friends were stressed, looking up internships and trying to make life decisions. Suddenly it was a frenzy at our hangout where everyone was freaking out about the future.
We all took a second and realized we are only 20, some of us even 19! We didn't need to have the future figured out, sure it was coming fast but we didn't need to have our 401K plan figured out today.
College is stressful enough as it is without the looming fear of the future and how much of it we don't have figured out. So take it one step at a time and don't worry if you don't have it figured out.
Start with the internships and get the internships in areas you've never thought of, for writers don't go for the simple editing jobs or the assistant go for the creative side of marketing for a hospital or maybe the writers end of major corporations social media.
For the science majors don't look for the research assistant find the off the wall hospital tech job and see what directions are really available to you.
College isn't necessarily about planning your future out to a perfect science but rather exploring the options that your degree is giving you.
College is about finding your passion, making self-discoveries and having fun before the all too scary adult life throws itself at you.
So, apply for the internship you never thought of instead of giving yourself anxiety over everything you haven't figured out
College is the place where it's OK not to know.
