During the early days of March, students at the University of New Hampshire were all curious about who their spring concert would be. With a performance by Kygo the previous semester, all students knew that this concert coming up would be one they would want to go to. But as SCOPE, a student committee from UNH that puts on the university's concerts, was AWOL for an extremely long time, rumors began to circle about who would put on the show. I heard multiple, including Chase Rice, G-Eazy, and Future. But on March 21st, SCOPE finally released that Future would be performing on April 29th.
Tickets went on sale the following Thursday after the release of who the big show was going to be. Anyone who went on to the Memorial Union Building's website can tell you how much of a mad house it was. Even before 8 AM hit, when the tickets would start to be sold, people were placed in waiting rooms because of the high number of people buying tickets. Within fifteen to twenty minutes, non-student floor tickets were completely sold out and within only a few hours, all 5,500 tickets were sold.
Flash forward about a month to the night of the show, April 29th. Everyone going was more than thrilled. By 7 o'clock, the line to get into the show was wrapped around the building. Empty bottles that used to be filled with a concoction of alcohol and some other beverage littered the ground surrounding the area. Within moments, people were being taken away in handcuffs. This was surely a show that no UNH student would want to miss.
I will admit, I had relatively no interest in Cousin Stizz and Bas prior to the show. I had never heard of them, nor did I end up listening to their music before to even get a glimpse of what I might be listening to. But I was pleasantly surprised with their performances. While I was still unaware of any of the music I had heard, they still kept the crowd jumping, enjoying themselves, and all together made their performances as opening acts very well done. I expect big things out of these two rappers in the next few years.
By 9:30, everyone was eager for Future to come on. Multiple people were seen frustrated when they noticed that Future had been tweeting at Drake while he was backstage. Even one person tweeted at him, "Are you even coming to your show?" But by 10, he finally made his appearance, opening with the song, "Thought It Was A Drought." He kept the crowd bouncing the entire time, playing one song right after another, barely stopping to take a break for longer than one minute. Some of the big hits in which he played were "Bugatti", "F*** Up Some Commas", "Jumpman", and "Diamonds Dancing." By 10:30, and a crowd going crazy through "F*** Up Some Commas", "Jumpman", and "Diamonds Dancing" played one right after another, everyone was completely exhausted. In the finale, two canons shot off confetti, completing the end of one great show.
While Future truly put on a great show, there were a few complaints I had about it, some of which were beyond his reach. For one, the rowdiness of the crowd was definitely not one I was a fan of. Being on the floor was no doubt the best way to enjoy the show, but being a person not completely blessed height-wise, I could not see anything. I couldn't even tell you what Future looked like. On top of that, a lot of men were completely obnoxious. While I understand the majority of students there were highly intoxicated, I witnessed one pee on the floor of the Whit. Not only was it relatively easy to get to the bathroom, but it was also just as easy to get back to the same spot on the floor that you originally were. This was completely obnoxious and certainly uncalled for it. I was very unimpressed with how ignorant some people I went to college with are.
Future did a few things that were relatively concerning for me as well. Multiple times he asked how we were all doing in Boston. At first, I thought he was just making a claim to see how those from the Boston area were doing, but after hearing it fifteen or so times, it became apparent to me that he thought he was in Boston, even though he also said the University of New Hampshire multiple times. He also asked, "Where the ladies at?" multiple times throughout the show. We get it Future, there are women here. We understand. In the few times that he spoke, this was all we had to hear, which left me somewhat disappointed, but I was still nonetheless impressed with his show and had an absolute blast.
Within the week that the concert was supposed to be held, rapper Drake and Future announced that they will be going on tour this summer. I honestly suggest spending the time and money to see this show. Listed below are the dates and locations at where the two will be this summer. With how great of a show that Future put on, surely one with Drake, and a performance of "Jumpman" with both of them live will be something no one will want to miss.
