"I'm Here, Why Are You Still Around?"
A line of one of my favorite songs, and one that took me until now to understand is “I’m here, why are you still around?” (can be found in the song "Eggshells" by Wild Child, if you’re into indie alternative music).
For quite a while this line didn’t make sense to me. I always thought it should be “I’m gone, why are you still around?” As in, “hey I’m over you, so why are you still lingering around in my life/pretending everything is fine.” And then it clicked.
This line is for those of us who give our all and continue to do so even after those that we are giving our all to prove that they are unworthy. “Why are you still around?” isn’t a question directed at the unwanted clingy person you’re not interested in, but is instead directed at the person who used you and thinks it’s okay to continue to do so, because they know that no matter what, you’ll always be there.
It’s directed at the person you care so much and so deeply about that no matter what they do or how they treat you, you’ll pick up the phone when they need you. But this isn’t fair, and you know that.
While this person will always remain someone who you love to their core and would do anything for, it’s exhausting when that level of loyalty isn’t reciprocated. So, of course, when Kelsey Wilson was writing "Eggshells" she included the line “I’m here, why are you still around?” Because sometimes, when you care so much about a person only to get none of that support in return, you begin to wish that person wasn’t in your life at all.
Sure it is great to have that one person in your life that things are easy with, and that you don’t have to think twice about loving with every ounce of your being, but at what point does your love and the safety net that your relationship provides fail to outweigh the ways in which that person has let you down and failed to be there for you?
Wild Child really hit the feels on this one.
