Dear School Officials,
There are many pressing problems in the society we live in today. One of them is the education of students, more specifically whether or not schools should shorten the week to only four days, but with each day being longer. Currently, we have five school days per week, and with those five school days, we seem to have the workloads of another school day on top of that. In my opinion, you should not change the length of the school week because the days will become longer, making our workload larger. Also, that will cause even more hectic schedules to be made because there will be long days and even more workload.
The first reason as to why I am against having shorter weeks is, as said before, by making the workdays longer, you will be making the workload larger. By doing this, it will not be beneficial to the students' academic because the child will be worried about getting their work done rather than learning through the process as they do currently. In addition, by making the school days only four days, it will hurt the social progress of the student because all they will be doing is studying.
Another reason as to why I am against this is the more obvious reason: the United States is already on the lower side of academics. Other countries have raced ahead of the United States making us number thirteen when it comes to academics. That is not good. By making, the week only four days the academics will simply plummet to the United States being even lower in academics. Moreover, the real world is set on five days a week schedule. How will the students be prepared for the real world, if they are going to school for only four days a week? School is supposed to be a place where students get ready for the real world.
The last reason as to why I am against this is money. Yes, you will be saving gas on that one day you do not bring the children to school, but in order to make up for that fifth day, you will add at least two hours to the school day, correct. That makes school go until five or six o'clock, causing you to have to possibly provide another meal for the students. That is because right now lunch is served at twelve, or one o'clock, and many families eat dinner at five, or six o'clock, but since the child will be at school you will be depriving them of their family meal and you will have to provide another meal. So all the money you just saved on gas is gone to making the cafeteria serve an additional meal.
In conclusion, as you can see by making the school day only four days, it causes many problems. It causes problems like depriving students of a family meal, giving them a workload that takes away family time and taking away their view on the real world. All of these things are something that a child needs, so I hope you will consider this before you make your decision.
Thank you,
Oneeka Kohli
