If you haven't seen Ellen DeGeneres' new movie, Finding Dory, well you better get right on that because there are SO many feels happening in this film that you haven't even discovered. Ignore all the negative comments about this film for this moment and see it for yourself because baby Dory is too hard to even resist. Disney out-did themselves again leaving this Disney lover (myself) a happy camper.
I won't critique this or type up a review really, but I want to give this film some praise. Dory is a spontaneous character, which a lot of us wish to be... spontaneous. We're always looking for ways or ideas that are completely outside of the box. I totally agree because nothing beats the ordinary than being extraordinary. Dory always knows how to get herself out of mischief by believing in the impossible. Don't you think that we should learn to believe in that, too? I do.
There is one part of Dory that never brought her down and that's the fact that she faces short-term memory lost. This isn't some disease or disability, necessarily. It is a problem that can be minor or even severe and for Dory... it doesn't stop her from being who she is. I bet you always thought Dory was funny because she easily forgets, but don't you think it can be sad, too? Imagine forgetting the people you love... It's almost as close to other related diseases that are known. All I'm saying is that Dory faced an obstacle that got her to where she belong all along.
Dory may have forgotten her parents at one point, but she was definitely not alone. She found Marlin and Nemo as her second family. They were the ones who knew Dory for herself, accepted her willingly, and are always there to do the impossible with her. Honestly, that is what true friendship is all about. Do you have friends like Marlin and Nemo? Loyal, looking out for you, always there to lend a hand and to spontaneously go on adventures? If not, find one because those kind of the friends are the ones worthwhile.
Not only does Dory always defeat the impossible, but she does it by being positive. For me, I'm not always a positive human being. I'm practical, cynical and dark-minded, but that doesn't mean that I shut people out who are at their happiest. I can be happy and positive too. I just look at the realistic side of it all. There's nothing wrong with being positive because that means you have a stronger outlook on life. Never forget that.
Home is where your people are. Dory was there to remind us that no matter where you are... that shall be home. It will only be home when you're with the people that you love and care about. Home is where your memories lie and home is where your heart is. Like Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz says, "There is no place like home." I'll restrain myself from spoiling anything, but Dory will always know where her home is.
I do know one piece of advice Dory never let go of and that is to, "just keep swimming." I most definitely live by these words! Just keep going on with your life and never look back. Never give up. Never look down. You're only going forward in life because time doesn't stop for anyone. These are cliches, but they're true. How the hell do you expect to do anything great for yourself when you're always looking back to fix your mistakes? They happen--learn from them.
People come and go in our lives, but there's always room for more. It's okay to have a small group of friends or a huge group of friends, but always know who will be there for you for the long run. Just keep swimming because at one point in life... you're going to make it. You're going to be right where you belong just like Dory, Marlin, and Nemo. I promise.
"And I look at you and I... I'm home." -Dory from Finding Dory
