Okay so here's the deal, Fordham's food options...not very good. However, I must admit that the new P.O.D Market that replaced A Crust Above is halfway decent.
If you know me, you know I gripe on and on about how Fordham's administration does not do enough to fix how poorly our food locations operate. During winter break, the prospect of having to eat at the Caf again during peak dinner hours actually gave me a splitting headache.
Yet, for all the complaining that I do, I have to commend Fordham Dining for not only fixing a need on campus but also taking one of the exceptionally bad food locations and giving it a major facelift. To give some background, last year the location was called A Crust Above. First off, who ever thought it was a good idea to have the word "crust" in the name of somewhere that serves food. Kind of makes you think its.... crusty. And "Crusty" became the oh-so-favorable nickname for A Crust Above. But that is exactly what it was, a little place tucked under Queens Court that served extremely subpar sandwiches and always had a weird smell when you walked in. It is smack in the center of almost all the freshmen dorms (shoutout the one exception Loyola Hall) which of course made it become the place you went freshmen year when you didn't feel like walking.
Now, the tables have turned. When I entered the newly renovated and designed P.O.D market for the first time, I had no idea what to expect. I walked in and saw something totally new. The set-up was rearranged and made the place look much bigger than it had before. The array of snacks and the introduction of microwaveable food is a game changer. Boar's Head sandwiches?! Massive step up from what Crusty used to be.
The P.O.D Market fills a need on campus as well. For as long as I have been attending Fordham, there has been a need for a convenience store where you can get the simple things that you would normally have to go a deli or supermarket to get. I literally felt a pang of joy when I was able to buy salami and cheese with my declining balance dollars. What a rush!
Let's dispel the notion that Fordham Dining is good now. It isn't. But this definitely a step in the right direction.
(Also, for all Fordham freshmen, consider yourself lucky you don't have to go into Crusty with the fear you'll come out and take a shower after)
