" Star Wars: The Force Awakens" hauled in an estimated $250 million at the box offices globally through Friday and according to Walt Disney, was on track to finish its opening weekend with record U.S. and Canadian ticket sales.
The seventh movie in the franchise already broke several film industry records and fulfilled the hopes and dreams of both critics and moviegoers. Collecting 120.5 million on Friday, the highest single-day ticket sales ever in it's first full day in domestic theaters.
The new "Star Wars" film is the first installment in a decade in the series created by George Lucas in 1977. Disney bought "Star Wars" producer Lucasfilm for $4 billion in 2012 and spent more than $200 million just to produce "Force Awakens."
Now Open in all markets minus Greece and India, where it opens on Christmas Eve, and China which is set for early January.
"Avatar," the current record holder generated $2.8 billion worldwide after its December 2009 release. "Force Awakens" has a fair shot at becoming the highest grossing movie of all time.
Original cast includes Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, and Carrie Fisher reappear in the new movie, as well as some newcomers like Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, and Oscar Isaac.
Directed by J.J. Abrams, the new installment of the popular series, already scored a 95 percent positive rating on a review website Rotten Tomatoes.
