As 2016 comes to a close, so do some of the hottest food trends. Although we all loved posting pictures of overpriced toasted bread with avocado, and "artsy" acai bowls, the time has come to say goodbye. Not to the pictures, obviously, but to those prolonged food crazes. So, say goodbye to Sriracha and Matcha flavored everything, and say hello to these new food trends of 2017.
WHAT IS IN:
Zucchini Noodles
I have recently discovered zucchini noodles and I am obsessed. These healthy "pasta noodles" also come in carrot, beet, and sweet potato. You can make them with a spiralizer at home, but I'm lazy so I buy it already made. It is super healthy and is a perfect substitute for carbs. Although its not pasta, you won't even be able to tell the difference once it is covered in tomato sauce and cheese. These veggie noodles are currently under the radar, but soon enough people will find out.
Charcoal
At first, you will be put off by this. You may think, why would I ingest charcoal? Isn't that bad for you?! Its actually not. Not only do they have charcoal ice cream, but there is also charcoal lemonade, water, and bread. Its filled with minerals and antioxidants that help you stay energized by taking out the impurities in other foods and drinks that you may eat. So don't be turned off when you see black water or food. IT IS NOT ROTTEN, its just charcoal.
Buddha Bowls
With new years resolutions under way, buddha bowls are going to be a major hit. Basically, it consists of a base of rice or quinoa, with a plethora of roasted vegetables on top and some kind of sauce. A lot of vegetarian and vegan restaurants offer this. But people are now making their own buddhaful creations. (lol get it). It also super healthy, inexpensive, and can be made in less than an hour.
Sushi Burgers
While sushi burritos were a recent trend, sushi is now taking on a new cuisine- American. A lot of food spots have opened up strictly for sushi burritos, but soon, sushi burgers can be ordered anywhere. It was popularized in NYC at Red Eye Grill a few months ago. Now, a bunch of sushi restaurants offer rolls in burger form. Can someone say yes please!?
WHAT IS OUT:
Acai Bowls
Im sorry juice generation, raw juice, and raw republic...but the majority of your income will soon wither away as the taste buds of millennials move on to better and brighter things than a bowl of fruit liquid with bananas, shredded coconut, and bee pollen on top. Also, why must you find a way to make honey sound fancier? #bye
Avocado Toast
One of the biggest crazes of 2016- avocado toast. At first, it started on Pinterest and Instagram. Then it slowly started to appear on every restaurant menu. AND THEN it started to become ridiculously expensive to just get avocado and toast. Why do you need to put an egg on it? Does avocado really pair well with caviar and alfalfa sprouts? I think not. Just give me some store bought toast and an over ripe avocado and i will make do.
Sriracha
Sriracha became the bully of 2016. Everywhere I looked, I saw Sriracha mac n' cheese, Sriracha pizza, Sriracha popcorn. I tried to like it, but something about it was just off. Maybe it was too much vinegar, or every time i ate it i expected to have a hipster's beard hair in my food, but Sriracha has scared me. When i thought it couldn't get any worse, I started to see it on shirts and hooked to people's backpacks. Although the Sriracha trend will leave with 2016, it will always haunt me in my nightmares.
Rolled Ice Cream
Rolled Ice Cream is one of the only food trends i haven't tried, and i am still mourning for my tastebuds. but that phase has shipped and sailed. it started on Instagram, like most food crazes do, and then became HUGE. people were freaking out about this. but honestly, its just a fancy cold stone.
