Folk Choir's Emerald Anniversary

A reunion weekend to remember.

On Saturday, April 24, the Basilica of the Sacred Heart was filled with the voices of multiple generations of musicians. The concert Saturday night marked the celebration of the University of Notre Dame Folk Choir’s 35th anniversary, and current members were joined by a multitude of alumni for a reunion weekend full of music and joy.

Alumni began to arrive on Friday night, and they were welcomed by a banquet and a chance to mingle with 35 years worth of choir members. People began to bond over voice parts, common experiences and, most importantly, fond stories of the choir’s director, Steve Warner. On Saturday, alumni sat among current choir members in order to learn the music for the concert that would occur that evening. Although some of the alumni did not know the most recent music that had been added to the repertoire, the rehearsal room was almost instantly filled with the voices of people who share a common passion for the music and mission of the Folk Choir.

The concert showcased some of the choir’s most beloved pieces, such as "Come to the Living Stone," "How Can I Keep from Singing?" and "Jina La Bwana." As a member of the ensemble, I cannot attest to how we sounded, but the atmosphere on the altar was incredible. I was truly disappointed when it was over, for I can safely say that it was my favorite concert out of all of those we have performed throughout the year.

Sunday brought another rehearsal as well as mass at the Basilica, which summed up the spirit of the weekend quite beautifully. Old members were able to return to the place they once frequented at least once a week, and current members were able to share the space with alumni. It reminded me that I am a part of an incredible legacy of truly amazing human beings, and I am extremely proud of it.

I am sorry that the weekend had to come to a close, but I can say that it was an amazing experience for the past and present members of the choir. I hope that it was an enriching experience for those who witnessed us, either at the concert or at mass. This ensemble is a truly fantastic group of people. It has been for 35 years.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
