I always say, "you never feel how it truly impacts you until it happens so close to home." Growing up, we are always taught about public safety. This includes day-to-day activities, nights out with friends and even social media. I have recently read and heard about several incidents involving those of whom I know and care about and even those that I do not know but attend the same university as me. When reading and listening to the stories, my initial reaction is "oh my gosh...that could be me." There are things we can do to try and prevent incidents such as assaults, but these do not always prevent the unfortunate outcome.
1. Be aware
Never go anywhere without a pal. Even if it's to the bathroom, but who am I kidding girls take the whole squad even if only one pal has to actually use the bathroom. That's good! You should never go anywhere alone, no matter how light it is outside, because you never know who is watching or following you. Travel in numbers, it's much more entertaining that way anyway!
2. Use the buddy system!

3. Life Alert is not the only alarm you should have!
I personally have a keychain that is an alarm. I used to have pepper spray, but that could easily be used against you. Always have something with you that can easily alert someone that you are in trouble.
4. When shopping, do not buy so many things that you do not have a hand free... it's tough I know.
Have your keys out and ready, and even consider using your keys as a weapon. It may be gory, but it could save your life. Be able to defend yourself at any moment! Your Kung Fu skills will be on point if you are able to use them!!
5. It's lit to park where it's lit.
Never park your car in a dark area, even if you are with a group of people. Try to park closest to the destination or near a light pole. Not only will this help you find your car (because let's be honest no one remembers where they parked), but it will also make you more aware of what is around you during the darker hours.
All jokes aside, public safety is one of the biggest concerns in our country. There are new stories everyday of assaults, but it does not have to happen to you for you to realize this is a serious issue for everyone. Take care of yourself and each other as you navigate through your days and nights. Do not let it happen to someone you care about for it to have a significant impact on your preventative actions.
