As a whole, our generation is the most tattooed. Some walk around sporting these huge, eye-catching pieces, and others have just a small something on their foot. Either way, tattoos are a part of our generation and we have made them more socially acceptable. As someone with many tattoos, I get tired of repeating myself over and over again when asked about them. If you have any visible tattoos, I'm sure you've heard these once or twice.
1. "Wow! Does that mean anything to you?"
Yes, they all mean something to me. If I didn't want a tattoo with meaning, I would've stuck with a butterfly above my butt crack. But I didn't. My tattoos are a constant reminder of what I have overcome and the things that mean the most to me. I can look down at my feet at any point in the day, and when I see that Darth Vader is staring back at me, I am reminded of my father and how much he means to me.
2. "What's that going to look like when you're older?"
Oh my goodness. OK, I know skin stretches, sags, and who knows what else, but I'm OK with that. Do not worry about how my body will look in 50 years, because it is my body, not yours. If I'm 70 years old and rocking a string bikini with my tattoos just hanging there, then so be it. I will love my body then just as much as I do now.
3. "How many do you have? I can't see them."
You're so right. You can't see them. My tattoos are concealed for obvious reasons. I don't want the entire world to see the things that mean the most to me, because I don't want anyone to criticize me for my decisions. My tattoos are covered because I want them to be. They are personal to me, so if you get the honor of seeing them, you should feel special. The average Joe can't just take a peek at my rib cage.
4. "Do your parents know about those?"
Actually, they do. In fact, they signed off on two of them (the two that mean the most to me). As any child, I strive to have the approval of my parents. They will love me with or without my tattoos. I mean, I'm not going to lie and say that some of them didn't upset my parents a little bit, but they got over it pretty quickly and everything is perfectly fine now.
5. "Are you sure you won't regret those?"
Yes, a million times. Yes. My tattoos are artwork. They are a part of me just as your hair and nails are a part of you. I hold them very close to my heart! There may be a time one day in a decade or two when I look down and say, "Maybe I shouldn't have put that there," but I guarantee you that won't be anytime soon. These are a constant reminder of who I am, and I wouldn't change that for anyone.
"Tattoos have a power and magic all their own. They decorate the body, but they also enhance the soul." -- Michelle Delio, Tattoo: The Exotic Art of Skin Decoration
