Everybody loves the first snow of the season. It awakens the childlike wonder of going outside to build a snowman and make snow angels. When you wake up and see the ground with freshly coated snow, there couldn’t possibly be a better way to start the day. And it was even better when it fell on a weekend because then you had the entire day to play in the snow.
Well, yesterday Delaware and many other states across the nation saw snow! For some states, this was the first time the snow had fallen in years. The students at the University of Delaware woke up to the freshly fallen snow. Even though it was the weekend before finals, it didn’t stop students from going out to play in the snow.
Being a first-semester freshman it felt like experiencing something new. It had been years since I had actually gone out to play in the snow with my friends. Yesterday it felt different though. Maybe with the stress of finals looming in the air everybody had a bit of cabin fever and needed to get outside for a short while.
It was also the excitement of being in college for our first snowfall. We didn’t have to walk to class in it, all we had to do was enjoy how pretty it looked falling to the world around us.
It felt fairly warm out despite the temperature being in the twenties, but that didn’t stop us from making the trek to the campus green to play in the snow. The snow had fallen all day and for once I wasn't bothered by it. I even enjoyed a cup of hot chocolate while sitting in my room and watching the snowfall.
Some of my friends and I decided to go out in the afternoon and take pictures in the snow. It was one of those moments where I didn’t care what others thought as they saw us take pictures together under a snow covered tree with a Polaroid. I fully enjoyed myself for that little bit outside. We laughed at each other and lay down in the snow in order to find the best angle for a picture.
The snow was still falling and our campus was slowly turning into a winter wonderland around us. It looked so beautiful just walking around and seeing our campus through different eyes for the first time. This certainly didn’t help any students trying to study for finals this week. If anything I know it made me and my friends even more distracted.
It wasn’t just me and my friends that had fun in the snow. There were also people playing football on the snow fallen turf. Having fun diving onto the ground and getting covered in snow. There were people building snowmen and dressing them up to celebrate the first snow.
If anything, this snow brought a taste of what we knew was just around the corner. Winter break is looming, but we all must survive finals week first. Then we will have six blissful weeks off to relax and play in the snow at home.
