An Open Letter To The First Man I Ever Loved, My Dad

To the first man I ever loved,

Dear Daddy, I could start this letter in multiple ways. I could start by saying how much I love you. I could explain how I look up to you every day. I could also say how important you are to me. But, what I really want to say is thank you.

Thank you for always supporting me in everything I have done. You have always told us girls that you want what is best for us, and with your support, it was easy to achieve anything. You were always there for my dance competitions and performances cheering me on. During every performance, I would search the crowd for your face and it always made it easier knowing you were there! The list goes on with the things you have supported me in such as school, work, and my hobbies, but dance was one that I will remember the most.

Thank you for your hard work. For as long as I can remember, you have always worked so hard. I have never met a more hardworking person in my life. For that, you were an amazing role model when it came to work ethic and I hope to one-day carry that on to my kids. As a kid, I always had the excitement of knowing that once I came home from school, you would be walking in the door a couple hours later and I could not wait to ask about your day or tell you about mine. Us girls would not have the things we have today if you did not work so hard, so thank you.

Thank you for teaching me the little lessons in life that only a dad could teach his daughter.

You taught me how to use a drill, and for that, I am thankful because when I got my own apartment I could actually hang pictures on my own. You taught me how to spackle holes in the wall before painting. Of course, I might not be the greatest at it, but I am sure I will get the hang of it eventually.

You taught me how to take care of a car. I know I might not be the greatest at taking care of the cars, but whenever I ask you a question you make sure to teach me what to do so I don’t have to keep coming to you. These little things could go on forever, and they might sound stupid to be thanking you for but whenever I need to use one of these, I feel cool. I mean hey, come on, whoever can properly use a drill is kind of badass.

Thank you for the endless laughs. From your stupid but stomach hurting jokes to your horrible dance moves, you never fail to make me laugh. I’m not afraid to admit that you are the funniest person ever. I think that anyone who reads this will agree. Whenever us girls are upset we can always count on you to lighten up our mood. Oh, and we can’t forget those awesome ninja moves either, those are killer.

Last but not least, thank you for keeping my standards high.

I hope to one day marry a man as awesome as you. From opening our doors to telling us we are beautiful, you have shown my sisters and me how a man should treat a woman. I will never settle for anything less than what you have exhibited and I thank you for that.

Thank you for being the father that every little girl deserves.

I hope you know how blessed I am to have you in my life. I may not tell you I love you as much as I should, but I love you and thank you for everything you have done for me so far. I know you always say you are proud of me, but I am proud of you for raising a pretty cool woman.

Love you most,

Your Little Girl

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
