First Day in Rhode Island

Took a little trip this weekend!

First Day in Rhode Island

When I think about living in New England, a lot of negative thoughts run through my mind, most of which have to do with the weather. Being from California, I guess that is just something that is expected. I like living a place with constant sun and warmth, it’s what I’m used to. Regardless of the weather, one of my favorite things about living in the north east is definitely exploring each of the states. Living in Springfield Massachusetts, I already have relatively close access to many of the other states in the region. Within the first day of arriving in the east, I had already stepped in two states: Connecticut and Massachusetts.

In the three years of being in the east, I have been to countless airports, I have flown over the U.S. almost 12 times, and I have been to Maine, New Hampshire, New York, Pennsylvania, and as of this weekend, I have been to Rhode Island. With a friend competing in the Swimming Championships at URI, the plan was to come out and spend the weekend in Newport, Rhode Island. I have known about the city for about 5 years since the first time I knew which college I wanted to attend.

While in high school, I attended a college fair and was immediately drawn to the beauty of Salve Regina’s campus. From that point until application time, I thought Salve Regina was the college for me. With decisions to be made, I chose Western New England University, and I don’t regret it, however driving into Newport, Rhode Island over the Newport Bridge, I realized the reason I fell in love with Salve Regina in the first place. Today was sunny and clear making the bridge and the water below it look like a picture out of one of those travel books. After taking a few detours, we wandered around these quaint little towns with coffee shops, antique book stores, and that rustic vibe you get when you watch old movies. With the beauty of a clear weekend, and waking up to two of my favorite artists releasing new music (All Time Low and Ed Sheeran) I can already tell that exploring Rhode Island is going to be fun!

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
