First Apartment Thought Process

First Apartment Thought Process

Moving into your first off campus housing can be an incredibly exciting and exhausting experience. The first few days of true adulthood. Let's break down the female mentality.

1. What am I making for dinner? This makes me miss Erickson Dining Hall way too much. No more quick meals on the go from Bell Tower, I actually have to come home and fix myself something. I have to use a pan and spatula? This is not what I signed up for. What temperature do I cook chicken at? Where is my meal plan money? Help.

2.  PINTEREST. Oh my god I can finally look back on my "Apartment Ideas" board and create a utopia of crafts. I should be an interior decorator. Look at the way I hung my pictures from a string above my bed. Thank you Pinterest.

3.  You can't judge me. I don't have to wear pants. This new backyard is perfect for tanning. The best part of it is there will be zero freshman boys staring like in Central Quad. I can literally be drinking wine 16 hours a day. I can lay in bed forever without a judgmental last-minute roommate telling me, "you haven't moved in 36 hours".

4. I can't wait to name my house. I want something that is cute and punny. It needs to be relevant to college without being too raunchy. Let's do a play on words with the street name.

5. I actually live with people I can stand. We are going to build an even closer bond and spend 24/7 together. Roomies & sisters, what a good combination.

6. We can make our house so fall. Pumpkin candles. Autumn flower arrangements.  Cinnamon potpourri. Pumpkin spice lattes sitting on our counters. #instagramworthy

7. Rearranging for the 100th time. I like the end table on that side of the couch - wait not that side. Where should I hang this inspirational quote? Should I put my socks in the top or bottom drawer? Sorority letters everywhere. I changed my mind on putting my desk by the window.

8. We can host parties. This open space in the TV room would be perfect for a beer pong table. Better start making a playlist while my parents finish moving my furniture in.

9. Maybe I'll take up gardening or something with this backyard- organic veggies, yum! It will improve my domestic skills to be more wife material. Who am I kidding? I'm not going to garden.

10. These big open windows make for great selfie lighting.

11. I can spread out my straightener, blow-dryer, flat iron, hair products, makeup, lotions, and every product imaginable in my very own bathroom. Three words: No shower shoes. No shower caddies. It'll be relieving to not have 13 girls hogging the mirror before going out.

12. Sunday dinners Jersey Shore style. Big dining room table set with place mats and wine glasses. We can take turns cooking dinner for the whole fam! I can't wait to make pies, muffins, cookies, cakes, all while using our granite counter tops.

Cheers to strangers sleeping on your couch, stumbling out of Pachinko's and forgetting where your house is, and remembering to take the trash out.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
