So let me tell you a little something about Finding Dory. If you don’t already know about this movie, it stemmed from a previous Disney Pixar movie called Finding Nemo, which was about a little clown fish who gets taken by some fishermen and his clownfish father, Marlin, swims all the way to Sydney, Australia with a fish named Dory to find his son.
What’s funny about the movie title is that Nemo in Latin actually means “No one,” but that’s beside the point here. Now I was six years old when Finding Nemo came out in 2003 and I fell in love with it. It is one of my favorite Disney movies of all time. I have lost count of the amount of times I have watched this movie. I basically know everything there is to know about this movie franchise and I’m definitely not embarrassed to say that I am a die hard fan at nineteen years of age. If you have no idea what “P Sherman 42 Wallaby Way Sydney,” is then you can’t call yourself a die hard fan, you just can’t.
When I heard that this franchise was coming back thirteen years later with Finding Dory, America's favorite forgetful fish, best believe that I saw it on the day it came out. Yeah, that's right. I have zero shame and guess what? I wasn't the only young adult there! You'd expect mostly younger kids to come see this movie with their parents but no, no, no.
You'd be wrong to think that. A good portion of the theater was filled with young adults. I guess they were die-hard fans too. After I saw this movie I thought it was the bomb dot com. This movie definitely made bank when it first came out and I knew it would but let's fast forward a couple weeks forward.
Disney had also released another movie called The BFG or The Big Friendly Giant, which was about a ten-year-old girl named Sophie who meets a friendly giant named Mark. This unlikely pair decides to team up to convince Queen Victoria, of London, to help them get rid of all of the bad giants. When I first saw the trailer for it, I thought it had an interesting storyline but I knew this movie would run into some problems. Let me tell you why.
Finding Dory had just come out weeks before this movie was set to release in theaters and it broke the box office coming in at number one. People were still buzzed about Finding Dory so who was really going to care about The BFG.
In my opinion, I think Disney should have waited until the hype about Finding Dory died down or The BFG should have been released first if they wanted it to do well because what ended up happening was Finding Dory still took the number one spot at the box office. But once again that's just my personal opinion. I really think The BFG could have had a shot under different circumstances but if it was about the profit, Disney should have known better. Either way, Disney is still making money so I guess it doesn't even matter.
