Before I go any further, this article contains some major spoilers, so be warned.
Watching Finding Dory with one of my great friends from home last week was definitely a moment to remember. Ever since "Finding Nemo" was released back in 2003, I was obsessed with the movie franchise, so getting to watch the sequel after 13 years was undeniably a memorable moment.
And because we live in such a hypersensitive society these days, it didn't take long for delicate others to find at least one thing in the movie that upset them: the characters of Gerald and Becky.
These two characters, Gerald the seal and Becky the loon, are indeed unorthodox and quirky characters. Both have very odd appearances, unusual voices, and erratic behaviors; moreover, they are looked down upon by other characters in the movie. All these factors combined left several people taking to the internet and social media to state that the creators of the movie are subliminally marginalizing people with special needs through these characters.
Unfortunately for these social perfectionists, there are two main flaws in their position.
One, these characters are not only protagonists in the story, but they also contribute large roles in aiding Dory, Nemo and Marlin. Gerald provides the bucket for Becky to carry Nemo and Marlin in their attempt to rescue Dory as well as for their escape from the transport truck. Needless to say, without these characters, the main three protagonists would have failed miserably in their endeavor.
Second, both Nemo and Dory have disabilities, and the latter's is often the harbinger for most of the laughs in both movies. Yet in both movies, we see how frustrated Dory gets when her short term memory loss hinders her focus. So does this mean that laughing at Dory's quirks equates to mocking those with special needs as well?
Of course not!
When we laugh at the times that Dory's short term memory acts up, we aren't laughing for the sake of mocking her; instead, we're laughing at the situations that she is in when she forgets. Dory is the fan favorite for her personality, quirks and all. Without a character like Dory, "Finding Nemo" would simply have been an all drama film with practically no comedic relief whatsoever.
The same goes for Becky and Gerald. Their odds appearance and personalities, combined with their spontaneity, is a recipe for comedy gold. And do they deliver well!
