Four years and five failed nominations later it finally happened: Leonardo DiCaprio finally got an Oscar, and a well-deserved one, might I add. Who would have thought that the sixth time for DiCaprio would be the charm that wins him an Oscar. Dreams do come true, I guess, especially in the Oscars.
The 88th Academy Awards, also known as the Oscars, took place on Sunday February 28, and boy was it an Oscar to see. Hosted by Chris Rock, there was so much going on with the Oscars, from the all-white controversy to the pretty nervous nominees. A lot of pressure was on everyone. The Oscars started off as usual with their red carpet event that is held before the stars enter the theater, and the stars were dressed to kill. From Kevin Hart, wearing the stylish Douche and Cabana studded suit, to Kerry Washington wearing a Versace-made gladiator gown, the stars were dressing to impress. Once everyone who was not boycotting the Oscars arrived, and was in the theater, they began and it was impressive.
Chris Rock opened with his monologue, and he did it with all the pressure that he was facing to talk about the controversy, while being fair to the nominees. He did a fantastic job hitting the issue head on, while making light of the situation. There was so much going on that night -- from performances by Lady Gaga, Sam Smith, and The Weekend to Girl Scout cookies being sold. The Oscars had it going on. While that, of course, was all good and well, it is time to get to the real stuff -- the winners!
There were so many nominees in the Oscars, such as Best Director, Best Actress and Best Actor. The main movies that were nominated for the awards include "The Revenant," "Mad Max: Fury Road," "The Big Short," "Spotlight," "Brooklyn," "Room," "Bridge of Spies," "The Martian" and many more. "Mad Max: Fury Road" took home awards in Best Sound Editing, Film Editing, Costume Design and three other categories. While many awards were being given that night, we need to express the joy that filled the room when Leonardo DiCaprio won his award for Best Actor in "The Revenant".
Leonardo slayed in the movie, "The Revenant." He played the role like it was his actual life, and when they announced him as the winner for Best Actor everyone in the theater was on their feet. He received a standing ovation. After five years, and five failed nominations, he finally won his well-deserved Oscar. Not only did he win, but his acceptance speech was a winner, as well with his talking about the Earth, saying "Let's not take this planet for granted, and I do not take tonight for granted." Leo had everyone in awe. He stole the night away, and he deserved to.
The Oscars was definitely not something that people wanted to miss, and if you did, well you just better watch it next year. Congratulations to Leonardo on his Oscar win, and I hope he gets more in the future.
