Although digital photos are how most people take photos these days, a lot of people still do it the traditional way, with black and white film. I have been taking photos with black and white film for about five years now, along with digital still, and I find it to be one of the most fascinating and exciting ways to take photos. Also, you don't have to be an expert!
The following are some photos I had taken when I was in my high school photo classes. Film cameras are just as amazing and sometimes even better than taking photos digitally!
This photo of my dog that I took was in the morning when she was still young and able to run around like crazy. The lighting was hard because she is dark and it was so bright outside.
Sometimes I would just find random animals and take photos of them, but they end up being the sharpest and kindest photos that I have taken. Sometimes it's hard to know what your photo will really turn out to look like, considering you can't see it while you're taking it! Usually, I take a photo on my phone before taking a film photo, just so I have a relatively good idea of what it may look like.
Who would have thought I could lens flip with a traditional camera!? I think this was a water or distortion project and this was the most recent newspaper we had. I flipped the lens and got really close, then put some water on his face and I thought it turned out really funny!
This is one of my favorite film photos because it captures a story that could really be so many different things. A fallen love, a marriage, or just story about two people; but within this photo, my theme was a story about some type of love and the way it turned out was perfect to the way I saw it in my mind.
That is another exciting thing about film photography, if you have the right mindset, idea in mind and you know how to use the area around you, these photos should turn out beautifully and it's such a good feeling to watch them appear in front of you when you develop them.
My most recent photos have been a lot of nature photography. I am in love with nature and the details of beauty that they bring to the whole world around us. Nature is important and I think capturing it; whether traditionally or digitally, gives not only me but hopefully the people around me a new aspect of appreciation and love for the earth we live on.
That's what I hope people take away from my photos in the future, the importance of paying attention and just seeing how valuable life is not only to everything around us but for our own sake too.
