Feminine hygiene is one of the most taboo topics, intervened with mythical concepts, (especially in Southeast Asia). The term refers to the use of sanitary protection such as pads, panty liners and other products designed for the care of vulva and vagina.
Especially for girls entering puberty stage, the sudden changes in their bodies can be very overwhelming. In a report by WashAid, most girls in Southeast Asia do not understand menstruation before menarche, their first menstrual period. The formal education about reproductive system is limited in the region. Only a fracture of schools in Nepal provides proper education regarding this matter. In countries like Pakistan, India, and Bangladesh, the topic is skipped for self-study at home.
Most girls learn about menstruation from their mothers, sisters, and friends but there is no guarantee of the authenticity of the content. In rural areas, reusable clothes are used more often due to the unavailability of awareness and sanitary products, and lack of disposal facilities.
Here are some universal tips in order to maintain feminine hygiene.
1. Cotton is better
Cotton is breathable and the ideal fabric for underwear. It reduces sweat which prevents the risks of bacterial growth and infections. Other materials like satin and nylon retain moisture and reduce the airflow. This encourages yeast and bacterial growth, which leads to infections.
2. Correct wiping technique
As the female urethra is very short compared to men, women have greater chances of cystitis, infection of the urethra. In order to prevent this, it is recommended to wipe top to bottom so the fecal bacteria does not travel to the urethra causing cystitis.
3. Healthy diet
It is very important to eat right. Make sure you have an ample amount of fruits and vegetables in your daily diet. Food like yogurt contains good bacteria which improve vaginal health.
4. Safe approach to shaving
Shave in the shower using a clean razor. Go slow. Use lubricating gel or conditioner to reduce friction between the razor and your vulva. Moisturize afterward.
Lastly, accept your odor. Remember there is nothing wrong with having a distinct smell, it is normal.
