It is a truth universally acknowledged that being a teacher is one of the most difficult jobs out there: little pay, early hours, and tons of homework make this job one that requires joy and passion rather than just a nine-to-five attitude. However, even the most experienced and invested teacher can get tired every once in a while, and that's where the need for motivation comes in. If you ever find yourself in that situation, whether you're working in a classroom or just teaching your younger sibling how to ride a bike--I have just the pick-me-up that you need. Namely, Valencia D. Clay's Instagram account.
Posting under the handle @valencia_valencia, Valencia Clay is a teacher in Baltimore who runs an Instagram account all about the importance and challenge of teaching. Her videos, photos, and essays all center around the concept of teaching as a form of student empowerment, and I think that her work is some of the most inspiring content out there when it comes to finding reasons to teach. From helping students grow in their learning, to guiding them through the trials of growing up in a politically charged climate, Ms. Clay is a social activist who speaks her mind, making her an effective and inspiring communicator. I first started following her account a few years back, and ever since I've learned so much from her insights and lessons.
If you're interested in teaching, or you are just feeling inspired to help others, I strongly suggest you check out @valencia_valencia. Her work can also be found at http://www.valenciasgarden.com. Check it out!
