Mark Lawrence Richard, Jr., better known by his stage name Witt Lowry (formerly known as Witty), is an up-and-coming rapper from Connecticut. I'm assuming we're all pretty familiar with hip-hop, so I'm going to go just into his discography and his musical and lyrical brilliance.
Under the moniker Witty, he released Headphone Hero in 2012, followed by Kindest Regards under his current name, and then, in 2015, my personal favorite, Dreaming with Our Eyes Open. Witt Lowry is really strong in all his albums, but he has definitely matured as an artist in each succeeding release. In "Headphone Hero," Witt Lowry follows the pretty basic formula of inflating his own image as a rapper, which is usually pretty tedious to listen to, but Witt's wordplay is so on point that it feels so new and fresh. Kindest Regards has some more mature themes that don't exclusively revolve around how awesome Witt is (which is pretty awesome, I assure you). It is a pretty standard sophomore release, with better production quality and a more developed, confident feel to it.
Now, to this last album, Dreaming with Our Eyes Open, this is what hip-hop enthusiasts need to check out. To me, this is his hands-down best release (yes, I know music is subjective). The beats are so hard-hitting and innovative, which, combined with Witt's classic word play, is on a whole other level. He combines so many elements into one that I feel that few rappers con compete with Witt. He fully hit his stride on this release, as he keeps his innovative word play characteristic of his prior mixtapes but this, in combination with his more profound subject matters ("Tried to Be Nice" is an exception) and more enhanced delivery, Witt has got his ish together.
If you have stopped reading midway in order to give Witt Lowry a listen (and if you haven't, DO IT NOW), then you have probably drawn a parallel between him and Eminem. True, his voice is super similar to Em; the emotion he lays down on the track is very reminiscent of the Detroit native too, as both have this contagious sort-of angst that just makes you feel something. In combination with the all-too-real subjects, the combination is just overwhelming, in a great way.
I want to make a special reiteration of Witt's delivery/tone, as his tone is one of the tell-tale signs that you're listening to a Witt song. Again, it is very similar to Eminem in some regards, as Witt's delivery is characterized by a high, emotional tone at times, in addition to impersonating other people, such as his girlfriend, his father, and others.
Witt Lowry is distinct but in a normal kind of way. He's just doing the same thing as other rappers but in a very different, very good way. Check him out.
