Ohana Means Family

We sometimes forget about our family, but our family never forgets about us.

Ohana Means Family
Julia Araneo

A little girl in a Hawaiian Disney movie once said, "Ohana means family and family means no one gets left behind of forgoten."-Lilo, Lilo & Stitch

Despite the fact that this is coming from a fictional character in a cartoon it still holds much truth. Family is one of the strongest bonds on this Earth and no matter what life throws at you nobody can take that bond away. Even after we lose part of our families to death, they are only physically gone because that pre-existing bond we have with them could never die.

Our families, whether big or small, loud or quiet, funny or serious, will always make up a part of who we are. Miles away or in the same house we lean on them when life gets rough and we feel small. And the great thing about family is its consistent even when its not. No matter what is going on in your personal life or with your career even if your family is a little broken they are still there for you.

And the greatest part about family is that it always has the possibility of expanding. Biologically family is determined by those you share genetic material with, but the bond that a family shares can be replicated with people who you are not biologically related to. Family are those individuals that never judge you, always support you, pick you up when you are down and ultimately help you believe in yourself when you have given up all hope. These people can be our best friends that were not wired to be considered family, but have relentlessly earned the title.

Most people have blended families composed of neighbors, close friends and important people they could not picture their lives without. Family is essential and one of those most important groups of people you will ever have. So when life gets rough and you forget where to turn remember your family will always be there and they never forget about you.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
