Each fall season, I long for the first chilly day so that I could break out my favorite playlist. These are the songs that I refuse to listen to unless it's a picturesque autumn day, complete with oversized sweaters, crunchy leaves, and really, really great coffee. They are the songs that feel warm and inviting, but whose lyrics mean so much.
1. 1957- Milo Greene
This one definitely tops the list of my all-time favorite songs, but seems to sound even better when fall comes around. In addition to its beautiful lyrics that find a way to remind each listener or someone they once knew, the music video will break your heart.
Favorite lyric: "the scent you wear moves in lines from your apartment into mine"
2. Between the Bars- Elliot Smith
I think everyone fell in love with this song when Logan Lerman played it for Lily Collins in a rainy car in "Stuck in Love." Its lyrics are cutting, but Smith's soothing voice seems to numb it, making it the perfect airplane or long drive background noise.
Favorite lyric: "with the things you could do, you won't, but you might"
3.Coming Home- City and Colour
I never thought it was possible to hear someone's heart break in a song....until this. It captures what it feels like to go around the world and still wish you were somewhere else with someone different.
Favorite lyric: "I understand your sadness, so I guess I should just hold my tongue"
4. Girls Just Want to Have Fun- cover by Greg Laswell
I'm honestly not a fan of the original song, although it's pop vocals will pump up any girl at any party. Laswell strips the song down and exposes the sadness in it, and makes you see that the Lauper classic may not be so fun after all.
Favorite lyric: "not me, I wanna be the one in the sun"
5. Lost in My Mind- The Head and the Heart
On my first day of college in 2014, my professor had this song playing when we walked into class. Every day from then on out, she would play a song and write down the name of it on the board in case we liked it and wanted to listen to it again. The Head and The Heart is an indie folk band, so they have a traditional indie sound with a country twist. It warms the heart and is great to sing along to.
Favorite lyric: "mama once told me you're already home where you feel loved"
