Existential Hotdish

What does it mean?

Existential Hotdish
Faith King

I am often surprised when I look through my writing pads at the lines scribbled late in the night, between customers at work, or while waiting in a doctor’s office, and how they can ring so true, or, at least be humorous in their vacancy of constraint. At times I have considered linking these meanderings together in some way; making a unified collection of what goes on inside a thought-filled-mind. I’d call it Existential Hotdish, because I am often merely reaching for some sort of sense in it all, or at least to feel okay about things.

Irony

It turns out: most men would really rather that you BE “like all those other girls.”

I want to look up the definition of demoralizing, but my phone has a virus

This isn’t the kind of poetry you want to read aloud.

Word that beg to linger, cause when you say them fast no one gets it,

and then its over and no one can remember.

Us Girls

And we’ve always been good at ignoring risks.

If you say so. I’m sure you are right.

Then we suffer quietly and cope with the aftermath.

Big changes or shifts in our lives happen in our lives, and then we just go on. Not giving them enough credit for the weight they carry.

“you’re living in a dreamscape..” Grace and Frankie quote

Give in

It can feel so unsettling not knowing something. Feeling up in the air.

Be calm. Just live it.

How the fields look when there’s snow cover and a full moon

I decide that I want to go visit the early April beach. Walking on uneven ground and hearing the waves coming in is nice.

“I don’t know whose problem it is..” Alabama Shakes

I don’t know what it all means, but sometimes just jotting down my confusion can really set me free. What sets you free?

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
