The Exhaustion Of Being "Woke"

Being socially aware isn't all sunshine and rainbows, it's actually quite opposite.

The term “woke” has taken on a new definition within the last year, gaining popularity after the Ferguson uprisings and the eruption of the Black Lives Matter movement. Woke, in relation to social issues, means being aware and willing to fight against the problems going on in the world. Just recently, the term has began an even newer rebirth, and started to gain yet another connotation. If you spend any time whatsoever on Twitter, you will start to notice the tone of the word woke moving towards negative. People use the term as a sort of insult when they think someone is taking a subject deeper than it should be. People have also grouped woke people into a category of people who “drag instead of educate” on social media.

It seems that lately people are more focused on who to call woke, what to call woke and how to criticize the woke, rather than acknowledging the actual work of the woke. Any person who spends their time devoting themselves to the betterment of the world, in regards to social issues, will almost always say that being socially conscious is exhausting. And to have the work go not only unappreciated, but constantly put down, is sometimes unbearable.

Not only is the constant negative feedback disheartening, but the issues themselves also have a huge toll. It does not become easier to watch your people being gunned down by people who are supposed to protect you. It does not become easier to see racial slurs being used in a nonchalant manner. It does not become easier to create a space to talk about awkward issues. It does not become easier to go to a protest and see the mother of a slain victim crying, wishing they could have another moment with their child.

To be woke does not imply that you are somehow invincible. The woke get tired too, they just decide to never sleep. They decide instead that since Tamir Rice did not ever get to come back home from the park, then they have a duty to spread the message of police brutality. They decide that since four in 10 transgender people will attempt suicide, that they must call out people who are transphobic and educate on proper pronouns. They decide that since women of color are paid much less than anyone in the world, that they must stop misogyny when they see it on their timeline.

The woke decide that their exhaustion will always be worth it, if they can change, save, or influence even one life.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
