In recent years, the push for companies to provide dairy-free products has been quite strong. Soy milk, coconut milk, almond milk, and other nut milks have been effective milk substitutes for many people, and companies like So Delicious, Rice Dream and Amy's have established themselves as trusted brands for those looking for quality dairy-free products, including ice cream. In the spring of 2016, something revolutionary was released — Ben & Jerry's Non-Dairy Ice Cream. A total game changer to say the least.
I know what you're thinking: "Non-dairy ice cream?! That sounds disgusting!" I was skeptical at first too, but after trying it myself, I was amazed. It is indistinguishable from ice cream made with regular milk. The four flavors, Chunky Monkey, Chocolate Fudge Brownie, PB & Cookies, and Coffee Caramel Fudge are all made with almond milk and are certified vegan.
Chunky Monkey is a classic Ben & Jerry's flavor, combining banana ice cream with walnut chunks and fudge pieces. The only difference is the almond milk. Chocolate Fudge Brownie is another Ben & Jerry's favorite. The coolest part is the fact that the brownies come from Greyston Bakery in Yonkers, N.Y., a vegan bakery that provides jobs for low-income citizens. PB & Cookies mixes Oreo cookies (which are also certified vegan, surprisingly) with swirls of crunchy peanut butter (also certified vegan). Coffee Caramel Fudge is an exclusive flavor for the diary-free line. It's a brand-new flavor that mixes together fair-trade coffee, caramel, and fudge chunks to create something never-before-seen from Ben & Jerry's.
I guarantee if you gave these ice creams to someone and didn't tell them they were dairy free, they'd never know the difference. Even though they used almond milk, the flavor is spot on. I have no idea how they perfected these, but they're worthy of an incredible amount of praise. The cartons are available in the ice cream section of most grocery stores and cost the same amount as other Ben & Jerry's cartons.
