I think it's easy for everyone to succumb to -- you look forward to the big things. Turning 21, going to a concert, graduating, vacation. We always strive for something big and exciting that we feel is going to give us an amazing experience and memories. You wait and you long, but in the meantime, life is passing you by. Sure big moments create big memories; they are extremely crucial to your life. But if you forget to enjoy all the little day to day moments that make life great, you could be missing out on a lot of other memories. Some of my greatest times with my friends were, of course, going to concerts, road tripping or going to a lake house, and prom. But some of my equally great times were things that people would call a waste of time, like riding around in a car late at night, talking, singing and rolling down the windows like idiots. They were eating breakfast at McDonald's because we all realized we were too broke to eat at an actual breakfast spot -- and then all getting chicken nuggets and Big Macs at a possibly unacceptably early time -- but who cares because who's judging who? I'll never forget the times when we'd sit in one of my best friends rooms and just talk all night and drink tea and play Qwirkle (if you don't know what that is google it, it's a good time). I'll never forget after hours at the pool I worked at. And let's face it, there's no greater time when your friends from different worlds collide and meet, or maybe you get to show your best friend a new home that holds your heart, different than where you grew up together. We don't take pictures of these things or Instagram to show people how much fun we're having- we live in the moment. These are the times that make you who you are and you will tell your kids about one day. You'll look back and smile at the little things and all the people you did them with.
Concerts and trips and events are amazing and fun, but sometimes I think that we forget the little moments that ultimately build our lives. And they may seem like small little moments to others, but they mean more to me than anything else. and to me they're big. So appreciate the little moments, because like Keith Urban says, "Ain't it funny how the best days of my life/Was all that wasted time." As you grow up, you have less and less time to waste, so appreciate the little moments now. Graduation, turning 21 -- that passes you by in a flash and before you know it, they're gone. But the little moments are around you every day.
