It's Okay To Not Be Okay

And some thoughts on what to do when you're overwhelmed by emotions.

A young girl walking alone in the desert.

I somehow cannot escape the feeling of loneliness that washes over me sometimes; it has especially been hard during this time of self-isolation and quarantine. Although I know that I am not the only person affected by this, it doesn't seem that way. Some days are good and others are extremely difficult, but the one thing I have learned through this all is that I still have my ability to respond. No one or thing can take that away from me -- not even a virus that is literally taking away lives.

That is why I have decided to take matters into my own hands. I will allow myself to feel defeated, upset and angry; but I will not let myself sink into those feelings and become smothered in them. So, I will celebrate myself, have hope, and laugh because I am worth it.

This reminds me of a phrase that I use to guide myself: it is okay to not be okay. Those words are so powerful and you can take your power back by using them! When someone asks how you are doing, don't just say good, tell them how you are actually doing. There is power in vulnerability, not weakness.

Whenever I am feeling trapped by emotions, I like to take matters into my own hands by controlling how I respond.

Whenever I have a million things going on inside my head, I journal. Journaling is an amazing way for myself to feel all of my emotions, talk about them and put them on a page but not get trapped inside of them. if you don't have a physical journal you can even journal in the Notes app on your phone; that way, you always have your journal with you for when you need it.

Another thing I like to do is talk to someone. Especially right now, communicating with others is so important. Whether this is in person, on FaceTime or Zoom or even six feet apart on a driveway, you will feel better. My favorite person to talk to is my mom. She is a great listener and always has the best advice. But this doesn't have to be a parent -- a best friend is a great resource too.

Lastly, sometimes I treat myself to something. Whether this is a sweet, a food from my favorite drive-thru or a cute new top, there is so much benefit to taking care of yourself. In order to know yourself completely you must love yourself and what better time to start than now.

Your emotions and feelings are so important, they make you who you are. You were put in this time and this place for a reason so listen to what your emotions are telling you, but remember: sometimes it is okay to not be okay.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
