Why You Should Embrace Your Struggles

We all experience different things in our lifetime. One person's story is different from the next's. We all come from different backgrounds, ethnicity, nationalities.

While we are all different, we do share certain aspects of our lives. We all share the common experience of struggle. Even though there are many different versions of what struggle is, we all have felt the feeling of hopelessness--that feeling that some things just won't pass.

In my experience, my struggle comes from a broken home, former fostered youth, low-income first generation to ever go to college. A family of immigrants who sought out a better life. This is what I considered my struggle.

I was ashamed of this. Whatever I could do to get away from being a part of this background, this past, the present situations I am in--I needed it to go away. I thought having these issues made me different. I had wished and prayed that the outcomes would be different and I would end up disappointed in the end because no matter what--these were my struggles. They will always be a part of my life, my story, the reason I am who I am today.

And I realize now that, that is OK.

Sometimes it's hard to admit we have struggles. We can try to avoid any problems that come up and lead us back to our past but in reality they won't go away. The reason you are who you are today is because you have been through that struggle and came up the other side. There is no reason to run away from the problems or your past. What has happened is over with-- there is no way you can undo it. It is what it is.

The best thing you can do is embrace your struggles.

This is what made you who you are today. While your situations might not exactly be like mine, we all go through some type of struggle. We are forced to overcome these obstacles that keep us from being who we are. Throughout this we are shaped into better, stronger, and more intelligent human beings. It is hard to accept the struggles you have faced but when you do, it only makes facing future problems easier. You made it where you are today because you got past that obstacle. You have accepted that is it what its going to be and the only thing you can do is move forward. Do not let your past hold you back but rather keep you humble and remind you how far you have come.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
