After the Miss America pageant last weekend, 2nd runner up Kelley Johnson received backlash in the media for her talent monologue in the competition. During the competition on Sunday night, Miss Colorado performed an original monologue where she spoke about her time working as an Alzheimer’s nurse.
Following the pageant, day time talk show The View bashed Miss Colorado’s performance, with host Joy Behar saying “Why does she have a doctor’s stethoscope on?”
Days after saying that, Joy stated that she simply wasn’t paying attention to the conversation and was confused why a girl in a pageant was dressed in scrubs like Kelley. She said that she was confused and didn’t mean any harm towards the girl.
AlthoughThe View quickly retracted their comments live on the show, it didn’t stop Ellen DeGeneres or the internet from backing Miss Colorado and her statements one hundred percent.
Shortly after her appearance in the pageant, Miss Colorado got a chance to sit down with Ellen on her show. Being able to appear on Ellen’s show was very exciting for Kelley, who had actually used Ellen as an answer for one of her questions during the pageant. When asked what woman should cover the ten dollar bill, Kelley answered that Ellen should be the face of the bill. Ellen’s kindness and platform of equality were Kelly’s reasoning for her answer.
When she was on Ellen’s show, Ellen gave her more time to speak on her answer. She also praised Kelley for her poise and genuine spirit.
She also discussed her monologue with Ellen and how proud she was that it helped give a voice to people in her profession. Kelley said that doing the monologue was different, but that it was an important thing to do as it raised awareness for people in her profession.
Following The View’s comments, the internet went up in frenzy, starting the hashtag #NursesUnite. There was a huge outpouring of love for Kelley from thousands of people. Some were nurses and others who just wanted to speak positively out against the under appreciation for people of that profession.
It is fantastic that in this world we live in, people from around the globe who share something in common can rally together to raise awareness or fight an injustice.
If nothing else, Miss Colorado’s incredible monologue and The View’s incredibly ignorant comments about it has created a venue for conversation about the lack of appreciation and understanding for these selfless individuals.
