11 Books I Wish I Had Read Growing Up

In This Article:

I have always loved reading. Ever since I was a child reading has been of my favorite hobbies. I love diving into new stories and dropping into new or different worlds. It's a great way for my mind to escape, and drift off for hours on end. However, there were books that I never got around too when I was a child. Here are eleven books I wish I had read when I was a child!

1. The Golden Compass

I recently read this one for the first time back in November, but I remember it being on my TBR as a child. The main reason I never got around to it was that it was the only book series I was not allowed to read growing up because of the book's fictional depiction of the church and religion that are specific to this book. However, at the time I wanted to read it many people were pointing out that the author was atheist and the church in the book was supposed to represent the church. This is not the case!!!! I cannot emphasize that enough! The church and religion in the book are purely fictional. End of story. It's a great book about adventure and I cannot recommend it enough.

2. Alice's Adventures in Wonderland

I did not read this until the second semester of my sophomore year. I loved it a lot, but I definitely wish I had picked this up sooner!

3.Through the Looking Glass and What Alice Found There

This was the follow up to Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and I read this right after Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. I read this for my Children's Literature Class sophomore year as well and it was the book I chose to write a paper on!

4. The Little Prince

I didn't read this book until last semester, and I'm super mad at myself for not picking it up when I was younger!

5. Matilda

I still have yet to read this book, but I have seen the movie! I know they aren't the same, but it has to count for something, right?

6. Winnie The Pooh

Yes, this is a book too!! I own this book from when I was a child, but I don't recall ever reading it or having it read to me. Another book on my endless TBR!

7. The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe

Another book to movie adaptation where I have only watched the film. I had no idea it was a book series until after this film was released, but it's always a book I wish I had read before the film! I still have yet to read it, but maybe I'll get around to it soon!

8. The Little House in The Big Woods

My mom bought the whole series this book is in, Little House is the series name, when I was younger, but I never got around to reading them! I think by the time I wanted to read them I had already unhauled them.

9. Wonder

This is a book I recently found out about that I wish was published when I was growing up. It was recently turned into a movie, and the movie made me tear up! I definitely want to read the book sometime this year.

10. The Boy In The Striped Pajamas

This book I have not read and I also have yet to see the film. However, knowing what it is about I wish I had read it when I was on my historical fiction kick back in middle school. Definitely, one I need to read soon!

11. The Fellowship of The Ring

I still have yet to read this series or see the movies. I know I'm terrible! I have read the Hobbit though, so it counts a little bit, right? I have a vague memory of seeing one of the films when I was younger, but I don't recall which one!

Are any of these on your to read this? If not, I hope I'm adding some good ones to your to be read list!

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
