Eight Things Old Souls Feel Living in a Millennial World

It's not always easy being outdated in an updated world.

Ever since I was young, I was that nine-year-old who loved The Beatles and admired women of the sixties. While everyone else was jamming out to Brittany Spears, I was just learning the words to "Let It Be". Is there anything wrong with being an old soul, not following trends or popular music?

Not really. People are easily adaptable. You can definitely be an old soul with trendy interests. Attending a public university can be a daunting task, attempting to keep up with those around you; with the trends, music updates, new shows... As you learn with age and experience, life is all about balance. But there are some feelings us Old Souls can't help but experience through everyday life.

1. You feel as if you're always missing out

Whether it's a joke you don't understand, a show you don't watch, or some things you just choose to not be a part of, you can't help but feel as if you're missing out on something when with a certain group of peers.

2. You're not fun enough

Your type of fun doesn't always match up with the friends you have in your age group. When everyone else wants to wear heels to the bar, you would rather put your records on and dance in the living room.

3. Your fashion sense is never in style

Even as a kid, you wore whatever you wanted. Mis-matching was your style, even up until the judgment days of middle school.

4. You LOVE to learn

No matter how much your peers may complain about the upcoming test, "annoying" project the professor just assigned, you name it; you're excited about it. You have a thirst for more knowledge and wisdom while surrounded by others who seem to run away from it.

5. No sense of urgency to update

You're okay rocking the same style you did in high school, wearing the same beat-up Converse that you've had some inexplicable emotional attachment to since the tenth grade. You fail to see the importance in updating your devices immediately (you can ALWAYS see the "update available" notification on my phone) because, in reality, you're fine with the way things were already.

6. Your values and interests don't align with your peers

you seek out friendships in the older crowd. When I was a freshman in high school, my closest friends were seniors in high school. I just didn't seem to have the same mentality as those in my grade. Now as a young adult, I seek out friendships with older adults. I feel more of a connection with them.

7. THE MUSIC!

No matter how hard you try to get into it, you just are not into popular and trendy music! I cannot even begin to explain how many times I have tried the "Ultimate Rappers" playlist on Spotify. I have tried so hard and listened to it all so I can jam to gangsta rap in the car with my friends. But to be honest, put on "The Rolling Stones", or the "Funk Outta Here" playlist on Spotify, and I'm ready to jam.

8. You just don't get it.

You don't quite understand people your own age. You don't feel a sense of belonging with your own generation, with whom you will be future leaders and changing the world. But you aren't really sure if that is a good thing.

Old souls can absolutely get along in a millennial world. It can feel frustrating and somewhat isolating. It's all about finding friends who share your interests and spark your flame.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
