As we all know, in our society today there are many controversial topics at hand. Whether it be about politics, the environment or a current event. There is always a side to every story and debate. Many of us like to be opinionated about these topics that are upon us and we often are not afraid to pick a side very quickly.
It came to my attention one evening when I was explaining in one of my college classes what 4-H and FFA (Future Farmers of America) was. I was receiving an award at my high school FFA banquet and was missing class for it so, my professor had me explain to the class what it was all about. Explaining quickly turned into a discussion with lots of questions.
Living in the country and having a farmer as a father my whole life, I didn't realize how much knowledge I had on the subject. Many of my classmates didn't know where their food came from or how it got to the grocery store. This was mind-blowing to me. How can you not know how your food got to your plate?
Then I realized if they were never taught this information or grew up around it like I did, then how would they know? If you were simply taught that your food comes from the grocery store and you never did any further research than that then, of course, that's what you are going to think.
After having this discussion, I looked at the bigger picture. If people aren't educated about where their food comes from, what else are they not educated on? Like gun control, feminism issues, immigration laws, etc.
Although people are not educated about these topics, they are so quick to jump to conclusions, to choose a side, to debate on it. They are so opionated about what they have heard on social media or what their father told them was "right." We often follow the path of what the majority believes. America is the way it is because of this. Hardly anyone reads the facts or takes the time to do their research. If you're going to debate something, have facts to back your opinions up. Imagine how the polls would be different if everyone had knowledge and credible research to vote off of. The results could be a lot different.
If you are a college student, now is the time to be learning as much as possible and to become a more well-rounded individual. Do your research. Search for the facts. You might be surprised what you learn or didn't know. Wouldn't you rather be educated on a well-known topic then to just follow what your Twitter followers say? Next time, do your research before you debate and argue about a topic you know nothing about.
