He’s back! The ginger Jesus has returned and kicks off the new year with some killer new singles! Was it a coincidence that the year Ed Sheeran disappeared was the same year that everything went to complete sh*t? We knew that Ed was giving us something this Friday, many thinking a full album, but honestly, he could have tweeted a picture of a sandwich, and it would have had the world shook. For real, Ed could sing about his grocery list, and we would all still buy the song. Just hours after releasing both singles, Ed grabbed the two top positions on the iTunes Song Charts of 60 countries. He is the first artist ever to do so.
These two singles are a glimpse of Ed’s upcoming album titled, “Divide.” Ed Sheeran has physically divided all of our souls from our physical bodies with these two singles. If you haven’t heard them yet, prepare yourself you may end up like this:
The first single is titled, “Shape Of You” which is a total bop. He originally planned to write this song for Rihanna, but as he began to write and sing it he decided that it was going to be for him. "Shape Of You" was the last song that was finished for the album. In the song Ed so cleverly goes to a bar to flirt with a woman whose “love was handmade for somebody like me.” The song was built on a percussive loop created by Ed himself with the help of Steve Mac.

The second single is titled, “Castle On The Hill.” In the song, you get a glimpse of Ed’s life growing up. With the emotion and rawness in his voice, Ed makes you miss the childhood friends you never had, memories you never made, and even that lover who left you but you never had either. In the song, Ed makes an excellent point by expressing that your friends are people who raise you just as much as your parents do. The song instantly has a fast-paced, yet powerful vibe that brings a smile to your face and pulls on your heart strings by bringing you back to not only Ed's childhood, but your own.

Ed made his first radio interview appearance on BBC Radio on January 6, 2017, to speak about his break and of course his new singles. In the interview, he mentions that the next time he takes a break, it will be two weeks and not a year because he’s forgotten how to do anything and had to reteach himself everything in a day. I am sure that we will all be fine with that. We don’t need another hiatus. Also in this interview, Ed describes his upcoming album, “Divide” as a schizophrenia album with many weird, different songs. He decided to release the two songs that were the furthest away from each other in sound to give people a glimpse of what’s to come and I don't know about you, but I am so thankful that he did.
