Easter: Not Just About The Eggs

I have been sick for a few days, stuck at home watching lots of tv and Netflix. Not the most fun way to start back into the swing of things after Spring Break. As I’ve spent an unhealthy amount of time watching TV I’ve noticed something; there’s so many commercials advertising for Easter. There’s Easter candy, Easter outfits, Easter gifts, Easter food, and the list is endless. But as we enter into the Spring season I’m concerned the focus of Easter has been completely lost. Another holiday celebrated in America that has turned to consumerism.

Easter is a time to focus on the death, burial, and most importantly the resurrection of Jesus. It’s a time to share with others about the life changing forgiveness that can only be granted through Jesus Christ.

That doesn’t mean you have to take out the candy and family dinner. You can still splurge on a nice outfit for the day. But those things are not to be the focus. Those things should accompany the celebration that Easter is.

As Christians, we have a great opportunity to use this widespread holiday to share about who Jesus is. We can share our personal stories and what his death and resurrection means in our lives. While everyone else is swimming in eggs and chocolate, I urge Christians not to get lost with them.

This year, don’t get caught up in all the hype. Take time to read the story about Jesus. Spend time reflecting on what His life means to you. Enjoy celebrating the day with family and friends. And most of all celebrate that He is risen!

Luke 24:44-49

44 "Then He told them, 'These are My words that I spoke to you while I was still with you—that everything written about Me in the Law of Moses, the Prophets, and the Psalms must be fulfilled.' 45 Then He opened their minds to understand the Scriptures. 46He also said to them, 'This is what is written: The Messiah would suffer and rise from the dead the third day, 47 and repentance for forgiveness of sins would be proclaimed in His name to all the nations, beginning at Jerusalem. 48You are witnesses of these things. 49 And look, I am sending you what My Father promised. As for you, stay in the city until you are empoweredfrom on high.'"

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
