The eight episode prequel series to the 2000 cult classic Wet Hot American Summer was just released on Netflix on July 31st, and if you haven't checked out the star-studded project, I implore you to do so now. While it isn't necessary to watch the original film before the series, it enhances the viewing experience immensely. It's great to see how the cast has aged in 15 years (shout-out to Elizabeth Banks and Paul Rudd for selling their soul to join the "Jennifer Aniston Eternal Youth Club"), and there are a plethora of easter eggs that tie into the first film. I did a pretty good job picking up on most of these easter eggs on my first run-through of the series, but there was one in particular that I didn't catch until my second viewing.
In the second episode "Lunch", camper Kevin Appleblatt (David Bloom) begins to have stomach issues and cannot make it to the nearest bathroom in time.
Thinking on his toes, Kevin says that someone must have stolen his trunks, defecated in them, and hid them in the woods. Although this scenario makes less sense than the fact that Kevin James lands a hot wife in every movie role, camp chef Jonas Jergenson (Christopher Meloni) exclaims "That is the only logical explanation."
While the sequence is both funny and irreverent, what's interesting to note is that Christopher Meloni says the exact same line under similar circumstances in another film released a year prior.
In 2014, writer Michael Showalter and co-writer/director David Wain—the duo responsible for Wet Hot American Summer—created the romantic comedy spoof They Came Together starring Paul Rudd and Amy Poehler. In the film, Christopher Meloni's character Roland finds himself in a near identical situation as Kevin Appleblatt.
At a Halloween party, Roland has to use the bathroom but can't seem to get out of his own-piece superhero costume in time.
Unlike Kevin, who threw his trunks in the woods, Roland makes virtually no attempt to hide the costume and gets confronted by a partygoer almost immediately.
Well not really, but I think it's pretty neat that Showalter, Wain, and Meloni were able to sneak in that little obscure in-joke for their fans.
Here is the whole clip from They Came Together in crappy quality (HA get it? But really the quality is horrible.)
And here is the trailer for Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp:
Stream Wet Hot American Summer, WHAS: First Day of Camp, and They Came Together on Netflix now! (This isn't a paid endorsement, I'm just a fan)
