If you've been following my life, then you know I just recently moved out of my parents house and into a residence hall. Because of my job in dining services, I had to move in five days before my roommate and suitemate. In other words, I'm living all by myself in a suite-style room from Monday evening until Saturday morning.
However, by the time this is published, my roommate, suitemate, and everyone else in this residence hall will be moved in. But, I must say, living on campus before a good majority of everyone else is a wild experience. These five days by myself have shown me the ups and downs of moving in early.
Pro: You can relax because you're finally here
The countdown, the excitement, and the anticipation, can all go away now because after what seemed like a life time, you finally made it to campus.
Con: The energy is not as high as regular move in
This may sound weird, but just hear me out. On my move in day, we were excited, but I feel like the energy in the air would've been a lot higher if we came with the rest of campus.
Pro: It's easier to get your stuff put away
Since you're the only one here, you can sprawl your stuff out across your side and your roommate's side, making unpacking and organizing a tad bit easier.
Con: Your stuff can't stay over there
Yes I realize you're the only one there, but it's common courtesy and will help you adjust to a shared space better if you only use your side in your time alone. I will admit, once all your stuff is back on your side, the other side does look sad and empty.
Pro: It's quiet
Not that many people are in my building yet, or on campus at all for that matter, so everything is quiet and peaceful which makes for good relaxation before a hectic semester.
Con: It's quiet
It's definitely nice, but after a while the quietness becomes eerie. Some of the only sounds you hear are the pipes in the building. If you're lucky, there might be some signs of life on floor. In my case there are, but they're all on the opposite end of the hallway.
Pro: Free Food
Chances are, your early move could be due to a program, athletics, or job training. This calls for early wake up times and long days. On the bright side, they'll typically feed you breakfast, lunch, and dinner depending on how long they have you for.
Con: The Free Food Doesn't Last
In my case, we're only kept from 9:00am-4:00pm; which means we receive breakfast and lunch. However, dinner is on us and sometimes that can be a struggle when the dining halls aren't open yet.
Pro: Not many responsibilities
All I really have to do right now is make sure I show up to training on time, take my keys with me when I leave my room, feed myself, take care of myself, and keep the room clean.
Con: Responsibilities are on their way and you can't stop them
Eventually, the training will turn into shifts. The time before and after shifts will be consumed by class and homework. If there's any time left after that, you have to take care of yourself, keep your side of the room clean, feed yourself, do laundry, and try to maintain a social life.
Realistically, the time goes by decently quick because the whole reason you're here early is due to the fact that you have something to do everyday up until actual move in. While it's been a weird, but relaxing adjustment being by myself, I'm so excited for my roommate to move in.
