Last Tuesday (August 30th), I had received an early access invitation to the “Battlefield 1” Open Beta. On the first day, I played about five hours. Since then, I’ve played it for about an hour or two every day to this writing. After much anticipation, especially since the “Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare” dislike crisis, how did this sample of “Battlefield 1” stack up?
I personally don’t like to give ratings for games if they haven’t been fully released yet. Since this is an Open Beta test, there is only one map, two game modes, and a sampler of some of the features this game has to offer. That being said, I can’t really give a full opinion, but this may be one of the best shooters I’ve ever participated in a beta for.
No beta for any game has ever enthralled me as much as “Battlefield 1” has. Not even my experience with the “Overwatch” Closed Beta was this fun. It takes so many great elements from both recent and past “Battlefield” games, even taking a few influences from the recent “Star Wars: Battlefront” game. Beautiful WW1 aesthetics combined with the visceral gameplay mechanics we all know and love by DICE create for an amazing first person shooter experience.
Now of course, as with any beta test, there are bound to be some issues. There were a few vehicles that got wonky from time to time, one of the turrets on the train didn’t shoot correctly, some of the cover mechanics were a bit off but overall this was a relatively smooth experience. It seems DICE is well on their way to having a smooth launch.
It’s not an overly complicated game, nor does it really offer much that hasn’t already been seen, but there is no denying just how much fun I had with it. It’s just a fun experience that hasn’t been matched by any other shooter in years, for me anyway. It’s so fun that it actually pains me to realize that this is just an Open Beta, and not the full game. But it also thrills me to know that this game has so much more to offer when it launches October 21st. If shooters interest you, I absolutely implore you to go download the Open Beta off of PSN, XBL, or Origin immediately depending on what system you use. Try this Open Beta and see for yourself just how fun the game is. I guarantee it’ll make you contemplate pre-ordering "Battlefield 1".
