I was going to send this letter to Trump but after listening to him "talk," I figured that he's probably illiterate.
Dear President Trump,
While I am unfortunately accepting the fact that you and Mike Pence are our respective President and Vice President for the next four years, I will not accept the fear of my fellow Americans, the racism, the bigotry, the ignorance, the xenophobia, the transphobia, the homophobia, and the misogyny that you and your running mate have both created and emboldened. I watched your interview on Sixty Minutes in my AP Government class. I saw you look right into the camera and say “stop it” and I laughed. It was not a joyful laugh but a humorless, bitter one because if you truly didn’t want your supports attacking minorities, you would not have said many of the horrible things that unfortunately helped you win this election. You would not have demanded that we build a wall to keep out the illegal immigrants. You would not have called Mexicans rapists and drug dealers. You would not have talked of enforcing identification for those of the Islamic faith. You would not have chosen a running mate who thoroughly believes that any non cisgender, heterosexual person deserves to undergo electro therapy because their sexuality and gender identity “is a choice.” You would not have mocked a disabled man on television. You would not have made multiple comments that devalued women to only their appearance. Your actions would not be emboldening racism across this country.
Every single one of us is worth way more than any of your hateful, demeaning comments and the ignorance of you and your supporters disgusts me and many of my fellow Americans. They call, as you have, all Mexicans rapists and drug dealers yet they balk when one comments about how many men are pigs when they treat women, or Christians are conservative imbeciles who make it their goal to restrict human rights. Why is it okay to generalize the Mexicans as drug dealers and rapists but God forbid that one “crybaby liberal” comments on the oppressive nature of conservative Christians or how many men treat women and therefore perpetuate rape culture? Oh wait, it’s not. Let me remind you, Mr. Trump, that we have many drug dealers and rapists in America but of course, let us only label the Mexicans as such and build a wall to keep them out of America so that we can “make it great again.” To many of us, this is completely unethical. Let me repeat it for you again, just to drive my point home: not all Mexicans are drug dealers and/or rapists and it would be great if you and your supporters stopped labeling them as such.
If you really wanted to “make America great again” by eliminating the threats of drug dealers and rapists, perhaps you should not be looking across the border, but right here in America. Perhaps you should start by looking at yourself. A great place to start would be owning up to the words in that leaked tape in which you said “grab ‘em by the pussy.” Mr. Trump, until you have a vagina and are grabbed there when you have not given consent, you will never understand how violated a woman feels. Therefore you have no right to dismiss your heinous words as mere “locker room talk” because they are not. Those words are ones that give power to any man who feels entitled to a woman’s body. After all, if America can elect a man who believes that saying “grab ‘em by the pussy” isn’t all that bad (because that’s what your excusing it as “locker talk” is) then who’s to argue that any other form of sexaul assault / harrassment is really all that bad? For the record, Mr. Trump, any form of sexual assault or harassment is a terrible act because WOMEN ARE NOT OBJECTS THAT ONLY EXIST FOR THE PLEASURE OF MEN!!! We are human beings and we will be treated as such. Men are not entitled to sex, nor kissing, nor hugs, nor a smile from a woman that they find attractive. One day, I would love to live in an America where I can go for a run by myself and not have to carry mace in case I come across a man who feels entitled to my body and will take what he wants by force, my words of no ignored. I would love to live in America where women are able to come forward about what happened to them, knowing full well that the justice system will protect them. They will not be judged for what they wore (because if that argument had any logic then women wearing burkas in Islamic countries would not be raped. BUT THEY ARE). I would love to live in an America where women are valued as equal members of society, not viewed as menstrual raging objects that have no thoughts or emotions and therefore only exist to give sexual pleasures to men and “make them a sandwich.” We have come so far as a nation in terms of womens’ rights (in terms of voting, title X, and more equal pay) but we have a long way to go. Focusing on those issues instead of taking away womens’ rights (i.e. not being discriminated against for having been a man, loving another woman, or being able to choose an abortion among others) would be another great place to start “making America great again.”
Unfortunately I do not believe that you can make America a better place for women.
Much to my dismay, it is not just women being attacked by your malicious comments but it everyone who is not a white Christian male that is also hetersexual and cisgendered. Many of us do not fit society’s -albeit screwed up- version of normal. If you truly wanted to “make America great again,” wouldn’t you try to make improvements for as many of us as possible, not just the Americans that you and your administration deem as “normal” and therefore “good enough” to have basic human rights? As of now, I am not convinced in the slightest that you will do your best to help the people, especially those of a non-Christian faith. In particular, I am talking about the Jewish and Muslim people. While there has been a fair share of anti-semitic hate since your election, it seems as though you and your followers have a greater concern with those of the Islamic faith, claiming that they are a danger to our country. What you must remember, Mr. Trump, is that the terrorists groups who happen to be Muslims are EXTREMISTS AND DO NOT PROVIDE AN ACCURATE REPRESENTATION OF THEIR RELIGION! Do we as Americans look at the horrors of the KKK (clearly not the racists in your administration who have called blacks inherently lazy) and immediately align it with Christianity? No. Those are only the extreme Christians who do not represent all of Christianity, correct? Then why is it that we as Americans look at the heinous acts of 9/11 and more recent acts of terrorism from ISIS and assume that all Muslims are that way? Oh right, silly me. I forgot, they’re not white Christians so it must be okay to generalize them like that. Yes ISIS is a threat to be concerned with but for the love of God remember that it is an extremist group that does not represent all of the world’s Muslims that are wonderful, law abiding citizens (unlike yourself). In fact, perhaps instead of threatening to ban Muslims so as to protect your country from ISIS, you should actually attend your intelligence meetings. It appears to me that this would do a greater good for America as opposed to spewing useless, hateful rhetoric. And you do want to make America great again, don’t you, Mr. Trump?
When you say that you want to “make America great again,” I am not sure if you have a full comprehension of what those words mean. I have already said this but I will say it again, just for you, Mr. Trump. In the truest sense “making America great again” would means that you will put forth the effort to protect all of us, not just the top one percent of rich, white, cisgender, heterosexual, Christian males. But perhaps in your pugnacious (it means eager and willing to fight, in case you were wondering) mind, anyone who does not fit the aforementioned description is not a real person. Well, Mr. Trump, this might be a novel idea to you and those in your cabinet but we are all people. Women, Jewish people, Muslims, African-Americans, Native Americans, immigrants, refugees, people of the LGBTIAP+ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, transexual, queer, questioning, intersex, asexual, aromantic, pansexual), each and every one of us is a human being and we deserve to be treated as such! Do not try to take our rights away from us! We will oppose you at every step of the way if you try.
Now that I’ve probably gone off my rocker by introducing these radical concepts known as basic human rights, I will move on to becoming full-fledged crazy by discussing climate change. Oh dear, I really could go off on this one. Your cabinet pick for the EPA is completely against climate change and therefore will is most likely to make decisions that will worse our environment. Forgive me Mr. Trump but I was under the impression that since EPA stood for Environmental Protection Agency, the goal of it was to actually protect the environment from greedy corporations who wished to destroy it. I guess with Scott Pruitt for the head of the EPA, the only protected piece of environment will the be the swamp you refused to drain. At this point in my letter, I could provide evidence of climate change but it’s all made up, isn’t it Mr. Trump? Climate change facts are just alternative facts, right? Hmm, you know, “alternative facts” sound a lot like lies to me, but maybe that’s just me being a cry baby liberal having my feelings hurt over your win of the election. Next time you’re in Russia, why don’t you and Putin have a nice cup of tea?
Sincerely,
A Concerned Citizen
P.S. I hope my sarcasm and general disbelief of the absurdity of your statements weren’t too hard to miss.
