When You're The Duff In The Friend Group

So, this happened last semester when me and my best friend went downtown, just like every other Thursday. We were sitting in a booth with two other girls when these two guys came up and were trying to flirt with my three friends. While I was sitting against the wall of the booth, their backs we're back to me while they were talking to them. I felt unnoticed and the only time a guy would talk to me was to ask if one of my friends was single. They had one of their guy friends come up and talk to me. He really didn't look like he wanted to be there. In actuality, we were both "The Duff" in our respective friend groups. A Duff is The Designated.Ugly.Fat.Friend. If you don't know who it is, it's probably you. Your not jealous of your friends but you feel like the ugly duckling. It sucks that we're given this title we didn't ask for but that's how society is. Even in college, we These are the things we've felt one different occasions that made us feel like a duff.

1. You feel less attractive than your friends

You spend hours trying on clothes and experiment with all kinds of make-up but you still feel like the odd one out. You hate having to throw all that on and maneuver walking in high heels. You feel more comfortable in a big t-shirt, nike shorts and flip-flops.

2. Your sense of humor is sarcastic or unfiltered

Laughter is your best form of medicine. To you, life does so much to you that you forget to breath. You see humor as your "thing" and you enjoy it. Somebody tries to diss you and you clap back with your adorable sarcasim.

3. You're the brains of the group

You realize that you may not have the beauty but you do have the brains of a strong woman. You want to spend your Saturday nights studying for your Chemistry mid-term than go out to the bars.

4. You don't care about how you look eating

I'm that girl who would order a steak with an extra side of fries rather than Cesar salad. You're comfortable with your own body and be yourself rather than be someone else.

5. You're not afraid to kick somebody's ass

Just cause we're girls doesn't mean we have to be flowers. I've been doing Tae Kwon Doe and Kickboxing for the past two years and it's made me feel more stringer and empowered. If there's some loser messing with your friend, you the first person to glock them in the nose.

6. You're always the fifth or seventh wheel on dates

I can't tell you how many times I've gone out with friends and I'm the single one at dinner or on the group hayride at the fall festival.

7. Your friends appreciate you more than expected

Yeah I'm the mom sometimes and the designated go but you happy where you are. Your the glue that holds the family together. You guys may fight but you love each other so much that the small petty things don't matter.

Everyone is a duff in their own way, even if your the pretty, the smart, or the athletic person in the group. And it doesn't have to stand for the ugly fat friend. A Duff is a Dynamic. Unique. Fabulous. Friend and we should embrace it.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
