"Turning into some so and so’s that no one knows
But so it go
Come and live all your dreams out at OVO"
-Drake, "Charged Up"
Anyone who follows hip-hop music is aware of the beef going on between Toronto rapper Drake, and Philadelphia based rapper Meek Mill. It seemed to come from nowhere considering that one of the hottest tracks of the summer was R.I.C.O., which was a track by Meek Mill featuring Drake. The sad part about this was that while it was on Meek Mill's album (Dreams Worth More Than Money), Drake's verse was straight fire and Meek Mill's probably wasn't even English.
So how exactly did this beef start? Well, Meek started to somehow believe that Drake did not write his own lyrics. This was kind of a convincing argument considering the number of one liner golden phrases that Drake has coined over the past few years (Steph Curry/chef curry with the shot/sauce boi, running through the six with my woes, sixth man like Lou Will etc...), except Meek had no proof other than randomly stating an alleged "ghostwriter's" name: Quentin Miller. While Miller is credited with working with Drake on multiple hits, he's by no means a ghostwriter. Thus, Meek Mill's twitter shot went viral.
Now obviously, this pissed off Drake and he released a diss track which low-key destroyed Meek Mill and completely validated his irrelevance as a rapper. For four days, we waited for a response from him, and when none was given, a second diss track was released, this one was much less low-key and much more savage. Look, I'm not even Meek Mill and this track hurt my feelings. Of course, the internet had a field day with this. The most famous line from the track was
"Is that a world tour or your girl's tour
I know that you gotta be a thug for her
This ain't what she meant when she told you to open up more"
-Drake "Back To Back"
...and the internet had a field day with this
And then finally, two days after THAT diss track, Meek Mill released some really weak track that actually didn't make any sense, had no artistic value and to be quite honest, Drake's Instagram response was way more lit than the track itself.
...and the internet had a party with that as well
So basically this really isn't beef...it's just kinda Drake messing with Meek Mill, and Meek not really knowing how to handle all the attention he's getting. Here's another note. Nicki Minaj dumped Meek Mill so I mean it's fair to say Drake ended his career. So where does this rank on the all time rap feuds? Here's a hint: not very high. Here's my take:
GREATEST HIP-HOP FEUDS
1. Tupac vs. Biggie / East Coast vs. West Coast
2. Nas vs. Jay-Z
3. Lil Wayne vs. Birdman
4. Eminem vs. Benzino
5. Drake vs. Tyga
6. Kendrick Lamar vs. Everyone on 'Control" Verse
7. Nikki Minaj vs. Lil Kim
...
134. Me vs. My friend in the 8th grade
135. Drake vs. Meek Mill
