Scorpion is here and so is my review, breaking down the sound and lyrics of this A Side, B Side masterpiece.
A SIDE
Survival
"House on both coasts, but I live on the charts"
Drake introduces Side A with a hint of reminisce from his beef with Meek Mill by referencing his hometown of Philadelphia. Still, Drake manages to twist it all by recognizing the dark spaces and places he has pulled through, hence the song name. Drake also made sure to remind listeners of his chart domination, just like the lyric above reveals. The 6 God ends the opening with, "This just the intro, let me not get ahead of myself." Drake still has much more to share and vent.
Nonstop
"Got a sneaker deal and I ain't break a sweat"
Drake is a strategic rapper and planner, as he truly does work nonstop. Drake's successes, brand, and rooted foundation were referenced throughout the beat. Team members, Future and Oliver helped Drake to manage his career and build the OVO brand. Drake's hard work earned him a mansion which he described as, "Palace look like Buckingham."
Elevate
"All this happen for myself and my family"
A similar vibe and sound to the opener of past album, Viewswith Keep The Family Close. In that hit, Drake sung about the trust issues that come with the music industry. Drake wants to keep his real supporters close by, his family members. Like mentioned above, Drake sings a similar lyric. This time around, Drake pays even more attention to the actions and behaviors of those around him, mostly that have occurred in the past. And just like the song suggests, "Only obligation is to tell it straight."
Emotionless
"I was hidin' the world from my kid"
Drake revealed something quite huge on this track. Just like the rumors that wrongfully spread, Drake reveals that he is in fact a father. Speculation of him admitting to these claims on Scorpion did turn true. Still, this song seemed to have gotten a lot of words and thoughts off of Drake's chest. He also rapped, "All these followers but who gon' follow me to the end. I guess I'll make it to the end and I'ma find out then."
God's Plan
"I don't wanna die for them to miss me"
Drake released an iconic music video to match the message of this song. For the rapper, it was God's plan for him to give away nearly one million dollars to families, college students, and others suffering from large expenses in their daily lives. He awarded women with shopping sprees and children with toys. Drake, once again, is working nonstop. (I hope you saw what I did there.) Anyway, this song gives fans hope, as well as himself, that he really can do anything to help those in the city of Toronto and other communities both far and wide.
I'm Upset
"They keep tryna get me for my soul"
A bop released after Drake and Pusha T's beef escalated across diss-tracks and social media. The music video gave Degrassi watchers and fans nostalgia, as that was the setting. Old characters who starred alongside Drake in the hit show were also featured. It was a moment of reconciliation and memory flashbacks.
8 Out Of 10
"The only deadbeats is whatever beats I been rappin' to"
Drake spins a Pusha T comment into a truth behind all the tracks he touches. Drake's voice has the power to make songs relevant and climb the charts as if they belonged there all along. Drake knows, in the end, that he will get those plays and streams. He quotes, "Your sister is pressin' play, your trainer is pressin' play." If you have any doubts, just listen to 21 Savage's latest comments about the legend.
Mob Ties
"Twenty-nine is comin', they on edge when I cook"
Scorpion, like Views, was released on the twenty-ninth day. When Drake's release dates are revealed, fans swarm to make their own guesses and conclusions of what each album will hold. Even when Drake is quiet across media, he is a target of wondering what's to come. Drake also reminisces of all those who have betrayed him or shown him fake love, as his lyric mentions "It's too late for all that lovey-dovey sh*t."
Can't Take A Joke
"I swear I get so passionate, y'all do not know the half of it."
On this record, Drake discusses the two types of people in his life. Those who can't take a joke, just like the title of the beat suggests, and those who have no clue about his life and the truth of what goes on. Those not familiar with the Canadian rapper really don't know the half of it. He continues, "I've been kicked when I was down."
Sandra's Rose
"Spoiler alert: the second act is tragic"
Drake is no stranger to naming song titles that feature female names. For example, Bria's Interlude and Cece's Interlude. Now, it is Sandra's Rose. As the song is speculated to be dedicated to his mother, Drake has written songs about and for his mother previously . Just like the If You're Reading This It's Too Late song, You & The 6. Also in the song is a warning and spoiler alert that the B side of Scorpion is about to get better.
Talk Up
"This isn't that, can't be ignorin' the stats"
Once again, Drake is able to discuss all of the successes that are present in his life. Drake recruited Jay-Z for this track where he raps, "Y'all killed X and let Zimmerman live." Jay-Z talks more about the dark streets that surround our culture. The rap and hip-hop communities are still mourning the sad fact that XXXTentacion is no longer with us.
Is There More
"Too many Walt Disney characters, mouses and goofs"
Drake notices that there are too many fakes in the industry. There are too many people messing around for fun and are not truly in it for the music and dedication. That motivation and devotion is something Drake realizes to be few and far between. Drake also ponders of what else there is in life. Drake is trying to find more of a purpose to his life as well as the illusion in general. This is also the track that concludes side A.
--- Final Side A Thoughts ---
Drake had a lot of flows and people on his mind throughout the A side. Drake rapped about those who have kicked him down, attempted to tear him a part, and so on. The first side certainly exemplified the more fierce side to Drake. While all of the sounds combined might not have been Drake's toughest, it was more about lyric and words than beat. We could consider side A to be therapeutic for Drake.
Let's see what side B has waiting for us.
B SIDE
Peak
"Treat you like princess, rest in heaven, Diana"
The B side already starts off slow and mellow, a hint at album, Take Care. Drake dips into R&B vibes and reminisces about a past girl. The clues and hints at who the female is, is difficult to detect other than that she might be from England. The 6 God raps, "England breeds proper girls."
Summer Games
"Summer just started and we're already done"
Drake took over summer 16 and now he has claimed summer 18. Now that summer is here, Drake seems disappointed that a summertime fling ended before the season had a chance to begin. He admits that this girl broke his heart, "Breakin' me down when I'm already down, Breakin' my heart - Breakin' my heart - Breakin' my heart."
Jaded
"Yes I'm hurting, yes I'm jaded"
This record features Ty Dollar $ign's vocals. Jaded is a new way to describe the hurt and pain Drake has endured by the heartbreak a female had caused him. Through the second verse, Drake recalls all the things he has done for her and he wonders, for what? "Told me about all your insecurities, for what? Dragged me like two hours to your family's house, for what?"
Nice For What
"That's a real one in your reflection, without a follow, without a mention"
Nice For What is the ultimate female anthem of the year. But since it is Drake, it will be a long time until a female-empowerment anthem beats this one out. The music video collected the most hard-working females in Hollywood and let them star front and center. For several weeks, this hit topped the Billboard charts, right alongside God's Plan.
Finesse
"Can't be in a room with you and stand on different sides"
Bruno Mars and Cardi B are not the only artists able to dominate a song titled, Finesse. Drake's Finesse is nostalgic of one or two women in which he admits he is new to commitment but is willing to try. "I would make time for you. Commitment, going the distance, I'm new to all of this." This is also the song that features a lyric from one of his iconic billboard plastered across cities, the epitome of advertisement. "Fashion week is more your thing than mine."
Ratchet Happy Birthday
"Seems like time's out of our control, it's a celebration"
Light the birthday candles, Drake says happy birthday to a special person. His version of the birthday song is more edgy and non-traditional. For vocals, PARTYNEXTDOOR jumped on the track. It is a record that just might replace the typical happy birthday harmonies.
That's How You Feel
"Work all winter, shine all summer"
Nicki Minaj and Drake never did collaborate on this album, but that does not mean she did not earn a sample. On this catchy tune, a sample of her performing on stage is featured. This song includes hints at revenge and despise, a message Minaj expresses in her sampling. Even when the duo doesn't work together, their words and music still fits together effortlessly.
Blue Tint
"Top of the charts, back in they hearts"
Drake pulls reference from his joint album with Future, 'What a time this is to be alive for this sh*t." Their diamond collage cover of, What A Time To Be Alive was the spark of their bromance. Future borrowed a few seconds and quick lines on the song. Blue tint comes into reference as Drake boasts about his expensive sport cars and the tint of his windows.
In My Feelings
"'Cause I want ya, and I need ya, and I'm down for you always"
On this hit, Drake did not hold back with the name dropping. He calls out several women, asking if the still like him and want him. It seems clear that Drake really is in his feelings. Drake makes it known that he still wants them and will always be down for them. Drake continues to sample a variety of artists and this time around, it is Lil Wayne.
Don't Matter To Me
"Wild things you're doin' at night, trips to wherever feels right"
Mr. King of Pop makes an appearance on this song, something fans were not expecting but were certainly enthusiastic about. Once the track list of Scorpion dropped, it was trending within minutes. But once the features were revealed, Twitter and Instagram fueled even more. Michael Jackson sings, "All of a sudden you say you don't want me no more. All of a sudden you say that I closed the door."
After Dark
"Assuming the worst 'cause I haven't heard from you all weekend"
Drake shows both worry and concern for a particular girl that he has lost contact with. He wants to get in contact with her, to talk to her and see her again. He hates the silence and the distance that comes with the lack of communication. Ty Dolla $ign makes his second appearance.
Final Fantasy
"Careful when we're mixing potion"
We know Drake from his songs that long for certain women. But this beat takes it a step further with his fantasies. Drake sings, "I like it best when you're fresh faced and no foundation," a lyric that reminisces to a past hit, Best I Ever Had where he raps, "Chillin' with no make-up on, that's when you're the prettiest, I hope that you don't take it wrong." Drake has a talent for connecting lyrics together.
March 14
"But this champagne toast is short-lived"
We have made it to the final song of the B side and the conclusion of this double masterpiece. This song is dedicated to his confirmed son. Drake raps his song as if he is speaking directly to his son. Drake's albums are nothing shy of life-changing, but his latest piece of news certainly was. It makes sense for Drake to end on such a note.
--- Final Side B Thoughts ---
Drake is tremendously diverse as an artist that he can be a rapper and be a singer, yet we still know who it is. I enjoyed both sides as they represented who Drake is as an artist. Both sounds were able to represent the moments Drake was in during the time of writing and recording. Lyrics from both sides are already in the process of being memorized. While my least favorite song is found on side B, some of my favorites are also found on the same side.
Drake's past album, Nothing Was The Same was essentially his breakout album. Now, Scorpion seems to be the album in which he was able to really express himself and the mental places he traveled. He was able to be honest with fans about what has gone on in his life, behind the scenes. It was an album Drake needed to release, because for him, it was a release.
Drake does not release content for the sake of it. Each album tells a story and holds a representation. For example, Views was meant to tell the story of growing up in the city of Toronto. Drake often writes for the point of driving around late at night in the city.
Scorpion was nothing short of fierce confidence.
