After five eventful, heartwarming, and tear jerking seasons, "Downton Abbey" is now in it's final (sixth) season. As much as fans know that it can't go on forever, we're deeply saddened that the show which has transported us back in time and let us escape our everyday lives is coming to close. In the past five seasons, though, "Downton" fans have come to expect certain things so, here are the things only "Downton Abbey" fans will understand. (Spoiler alert: does contain spoilers if you aren't caught up to season six, yet.)
Someone says, "Isn't that an old people's show?"
What is that even supposed to mean? If you're saying that I'm sophisticated and wise, then thank you very much.
Every Sunday night after a new episode.
No matter how calm you think an episode is going to be, Julian Fellowes always knows how to throw you for an emotional loop. You're guaranteed to laugh, cry, get mad, or smile uncontrollably during every episode. It's really an emotional roller coaster.
Someone says, "Honestly, I don't think it's that great."
Excuse me, but I will fight you on that point. Yes, I will list all of the awards they've received (including three Golden Globes). Am I biased? Perhaps, but if you knew that then why would you even say anything.
You predicted a plot line but no one believed you.
On the inside, you're doing a little happy dance and pointing fingers at all your friends. On the outside, you're as composed as the Dowager Countess because if "Downton" has taught you anything, it's that sass is best delivered calmly and with a British accent.
Finally finding the comfiest viewing position.
Finding the perfect niche in the couch or in your bed is essential to the perfect "Downton" viewing experience. How are you to focus on Branson's beautiful face if you're not entirely comfortable?
A new set of suitors arrives for Mary.
So many men. So much flirting. A little bit of scandal here and there, and only minimal thoughts about Matthew. The excitement about these handsome suitors is really what gets you. But, above all you're proud of Mary for being a strong, independent woman with killer wit. (You're also jealous of her, obviously.)
Realizing that Edith always gets the short end of the stick.
Poor Edith's parade is always getting rained on. It seems that poor Edith has even become her epithet among characters and fans alike. It's come to a point now, even in the final season, where every time something good starts happening to Edith, we get skeptical of how it will turn out.
Someone says that Allen Leech isn't attractive.
I'm sorry but that's just false. There isn't even an argument here. Please go Google image search Allen Leech and then let me know if you still feel that way. (Spoiler Alert: you won't.)
When You See Some Cute Stuff Going Down With Your OTP
(Cough cough) Anna and Bates (cough, cough) Matthew and Mary. In Edwardian and post-war England there's no such thing as PDA, so those rare moments of alone time between couples are held sacred by every fan.
Seeing promotional pictures of your favorite characters.
Photos in costume? Amazing. Photos out of costume? Slightly disorienting, but then you realize just how beautiful absolutely everyone in the cast is.
When the mailman arrives with your season six DVD.
You've been tracking that package religiously, don't even deny it. Clear your schedule because it has now turned into a "Downton" day.
Crying like a baby when Julian Fellowes throws a plot twist at you.
You should have seen that coming. Don't worry, just grab some tissues, it happens to the best of us.
Whenever Mary and Edith are at it again.
It's become a normal thing. You don't even get mad at Mary for her rude and snarky comments anymore, you're just hoping that one day Edith will put her in her place.
You're at a party and you hear someone talking about "Downton."
"Downton?! Were you guys talking about "Downton Abbey? Oh, my gosh I love that show! What season are you on? Who's your favorite?" We've all done it at one point or another. "Downton" can make strangers the best of friends in two minutes flat.
Whenever someone brings up Matthew.
Too soon. Yes, I know it's been three seasons. Yes, I know that Dan Stevens wanted to leave the show, but I repeat -- too soon.
Or Sybil.
Ugh, please don't bring up those emotions again. Between being mad at Robert for not sending her to the hospital and your heart breaking when Branson says, "Stay with me, love" in his beautiful Irish accent as his voice breaks, it is simply impossible to handle all of those emotions at this moment.
The morning after a late night "Downton" binge.
What were you supposed to do? Just about every episode is a cliffhanger, you can't just watch one. Plus, you got to see the sun rise so that was fun. What, coffee? Oh, yeah, don't worry -- I've already had three cups.
Someone walks in and starts talking while you're watching "Downton."
Don't you understand that this is a sacred hour? Either shut up and sit down or leave. I'd be happy to watch from season one with you at a different time, but right now -- shush.
Thinking back on all your favorites who have been killed off.
Just get some tissues and cry it out. It's the only way.
When Barrow starts doing something sketchy, again
Poor Barrow. He's always either up to something sketchy or if he's not then everyone suspects that he is. But, let's be real, he usually is up to something sketchy.
When you fail at recreating one of Lady Mary's beautiful hairstyles.
Well, I mean like it's kind of close -- right? You only used like 50 bobby pins so that's an accomplishment. Honestly it's not your fault though, this tutorial just wasn't good enough. Maybe you can rock a bob like Mary?
If you related to a couple, or all of these, then you're definitely a "Downton Abbey" super fan. Once season six comes to an end, make sure to cry it out for a bit. When it's time to move on to the post-"Downton Abbey" world just remember the wise words of Robert, the Earl of Grantham, "It's a brave new world we're headed for, no doubt about that. We must try to meet it with as much grace as we can muster."
