“’Pull your pants up black people, I was on TV in the 80’s.’ ‘Yeah, but you rape woman, Bill Cosby, so turn the crazy down a couple notches.’” A joke. That’s how it all restarted. When comedian Hannibal Burress made a joke about Bill Cosby at the Trocadera Theatre in Philadelphia on October 16, 2014, I don’t think he knew the consequences his joke would have on Cosby’s life. The clip of the comedian went viral and many took to the internet talking about his joke, making the story come to life once again. Almost a month later, November 10, 2014, a meme from Cosby’s twitter account added fuel to the already lit fire, making things blow up. Twitter users responded to the meme by calling Cosby all types of derogatory names and even made some spiteful memes of their own. Three days later, one of many allegations started to begin. Barbara Bowman posted an article on the Washington Post headlined, “Bill Cosby raped me. Why did it take 30 years for people to believe my story?” In this article, she stated how Cosby raped her and that she testified in Andrea Constand’s case – who also says that Cosby raped her and was the first to come forward about the allegations – in 2004. Fast forwarding to today, more than 50 women came out saying Cosby either drugged and/or sexually assaulted them. As many were probably preparing to bring in the new year with positive vibes and a new persona, on December 30, 2015, Cosby was arrested for sexually assaulting Andrea Constand; an accusation from 2004. He was granted bail and set free for one million dollars. His lawyers declared they would fight the case because they believed it to be unjust. Currently, Cosby is trying to discard the charges of him sexually assaulting women for decades.
The former TV star, 78, is widely known for playing Doctor Heathcliff Huxtable on his popular 80s hit show, “The Cosby Show.” The show is said to be based on Cosby’s real life family members. He along with some of the main characters: Clair Huxtable (Phylicia Rashad), Sondra Huxtable (Sabrina Le Beauf), Denise Huxtable (Lisa Bonet), Theo Huxtable (Malcolm-Jamal Warner) and Rudy Huxtable (Keshia Knight Pulliam), all made the show a phenomenon. “The Cosby Show” has made a huge impact on America and continues to do so with their lesson-filled, comedic episodes. The show ran for eight seasons; 1984-1992. The upper-middle class family has brought joy to the homes of many and though Cosby’s reputation is now tarnished, you can’t deny how amazing and groundbreaking “The Cosby Show” is. There are nine (of many) episodes that I believe that the hit show portrayed a great job in teaching a lesson.
1. Season 1, episode 1: The Pilot
When Theo brought home four D’s on his report card, his parents were not happy. Later on when his father came home and told him that he wouldn’t be able to get into college with those type of grades, he said that he didn’t need a college degree to get by in life; he would just get a job like “regular people” and would be perfectly fine. Dr. Huxtable then schooled him on how his supposed plan wouldn’t work out by playing a game of Monopoly. He taught Theo that financially, without an education, it would be hard for him to make it. By the end of the game, Theo learned that having a “regular job” won’t cut it in the real world; he needs an education.
2. Season 2, episode 11: Denise’s Friend
Denise has a
friend (Stacey Dash) who confided in her that she has a medical problem. Being
that her father is a doctor, Denise asks him if he could talk to her friend
because she won’t tell her parents about her problem. Dr. Huxtable does some
tests on the friend and turns out she just has a bladder infection. This gets
Dr. Huxtable thinking if his kids tell him and Clair everything. He then
arranged a family meeting letting his kids know that whatever problem they
have, no matter how severe, they should let them know because they are their
parents. No matter what happens, they’ll always be there to help them.
3. Season 2, episode 22: Theo’s Holiday
Theo believed that by 18 years old, he could live on his own, get a job as a model, have a fancy car and would be making a lot of money. When he goes to spend the night at a friend’s house and comes back the next morning, his house is turned into “the real world.” For a whole day, Theo experiences what the real world is like and what obstacles he’d have to face to get a job, rent an apartment, get a loan and most importantly, live on his own. By the end of the episode, Theo learns that the real world isn’t as easy as he thought it was. He had to start from the bottom to get to the top.
4. Season 3, episode 17: Calling Doctor Huxtable
Doctor Huxtable gets called into work and asks Theo to watch his little sister, Rudy. Two of Vanessa’s friends then come over for a visit. One of her friends start smoking, asks Vanessa and her other friend if they want to join but they both kindly decline. When Dr. Huxtable finally got back home, Vanessa mustered up the courage to tell him what happened while he was gone and was surprised when he wasn’t mad and merely said “okay” about the situation. He lets her know that at her age, 13, it’s normal for her to face those type of situations and normal for them to occur but her honesty is what matters.
5. Season 6, episode 5: Theo’s Gift
While studying with his girlfriend, Theo seems to know all of the answers to the questions he’s asked. However when he gets his test back, he’s disappointed that he only received a C after working so hard for a better grade. He goes to a learning center where the person who runs the center tells him that he might have a learning disability – dyslexia. Tests are done and it’s confirmed that he does in fact have dyslexia; a treatable disorder. After his diagnosis tests, Theo’s grades improve, making him happier than ever.
6. Season 7, episode 7 and 8: Just Thinking About It (part one and two)
Pam has a boyfriend who’s pressuring her to take their relationship to the "next level" or in other words, have sex, but she’s not ready for that yet. She asks Dr. Huxtable and Clair for help and their advice helps her come to the conclusion of waiting.
7. Season 7, episode 15: Attack of the Killer B’s
After Theo gives her tips on how to study better, Pam's (Erika Alexander) grades start to improve. She began to think about what college she'd go to when her ex-boyfriend and a classmate of hers tell her that she won't be able to go to college because of how much it costs. She then, along with others, talks to her American history teacher and once again starts thinking about going to college and achieving her goals.
8. Season 7, episode 26: Theo and the Kids: Part 2
Theo works
at a community center and deals with some young, troubled kids. At the end of
the episode, Theo vents to his dad about how the things he sees and hears about
from the students are bringing his spirits down. He told his dad about a boy named
Rahim who has to leave the help center because his dad got laid off from work
and he now has to help support the family. Theo told another story where a girl
always volunteered to throw out the trash and come to find out, she really
brought that trash home to feed her family. He learns that outside of his pampered life, kids are really struggling out there.
