Moving into a shoebox size of a room can be intimidating and exciting at the same time, while the pressure of being able to decorate it perfectly. When I was decorating my dorm room last fall, I was stuck on what to buy, how exactly to decorate and what would make the room look good.

I had no idea with no help from anyone, so I had to figure it out with my roommate. While people decorate their dorms all in different techniques, here are a few ways to go about buying decorations for your room.

1. Photos full of memories

Pictures, along with picture frames and little things to hold up photos on your wall is the perfect piece of home that you can bring with you all the way to college. Bring 4 x 6 photos with you to school, all photos from your summer with your friends and family and hang them all in different spaces in your dorm room. It's a simple way to spice your room up with things while being cheap to buy.

2. Cute throw pillows for decoration

How can you make your room cute when your floor and bed aren't properly decorated? While having some big pillows is nice for comfort at night, throw pillows add to the bed design and your personality. Urban Outfitters sells a lot of cute and funky pillows such as llamas, sloths, beaded pillows, crochet pillows and patterned which can be funky to add to a simple white comforter or even a gray or black.

While throw pillows are different, they add to the room to show a little bit of character.

3. Buy designs to hang on the wall

Who wants to stare at a white wall all semester long? A boring wall with nothing but some photos? No, thank you! I suggest the beautiful look of tapestries, which can be bought for cheap from Amazon or expensive but delicate from places like Urban Outfitters or Home Goods. While a lot of places sell tapestries, you can find cute and simple designed ones or even cool handmade ones with pictures and places on them. It is a cool and unique way to change the style and feel of your dorm.

4. Lights!

While it may not be Christmas time when you arrive at college, it is a cute and pretty idea to hang colorful or simple white lights around the borderline of your room. To make the room not bland and dark, especially at night before bed, lights going around the room can light up the designs on the walls, the pictures and make the room feel more "homey" to some people.

For example, I bought three different colored lights and surrounded the room in different areas with different colors and it was a unique look.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
