Why I Don't Write Poetry

Reasons why I'm not the author of poems that you read in school.

Throughout my life, many teachers have told me that reading and writing is not my strong suit. As much as that hurt me (believe me, I didn’t lose sleep over it), it has pushed me to become a better writer in general. I don’t think the hours of English extra help sessions and thousands of words I have written over the years have improved, but I’m writing now aren’t I?

1. You won't understand it

Poems are already hard enough to understand when you have a professional author putting random words on a page. Imagine if you had a high school junior with an elementary vocabulary writing the poem that you have to read for the night. I feel bad for you because you probably have to come into class the next day and make up a bogus explanation of what I was trying to say in my poem.

2. It would be hard to answer questions on it

On top of the fact that you probably wont be able to interpret the poem, imagine having to answer questions on it. I would love to see the look on your teacher’s face when you answer every question wrong and fail the test or lecture that you have.

3. It's probably at a jumbled third grade level

Despite my various AP English and honors classes, I have still managed to retain zero information that was taught in those classes. My most advanced vocabulary word is the word “good,” and my go to helper is Google Thesaurus. I know that sounds a little exaggerated, but if you have ever read anything that my pencil has touched, you would understand.

Has anyone ever walked into an english class and wondered what they weren't going to understand for the day was? If you're anything like me, poetry is the last thing that comes to your mind when going to school every day. Although nobody wants to read poetry nowadays, reading my work is virtually impossible. From the low vocabulary to the scattered ideas, reading my poetry is just a tornado of disasters. I once had an English teacher who asked us on the first day of school if we enjoyed reading poetry. Everybody answered “no” and he proceeded to tell my class that he was a poet. We all felt terrible afterwards but it made me realize that not everyone is cut out to be a poet or enjoy reading poetry. If you enjoy writing poetry, bless your little heart, but I’m going to stick to things I’m good at for now. And for now, that includes nothing in the realm of writing or poetry.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
