I Stopped Washing My Hair Every Day And My Head Has Never Felt Healthier

I Stopped Washing My Hair Every Day And My Head Has Never Felt Healthier

In high school, I colored my hair often. It went from dark brown to reddish brown to blonde and then back through the cycle again. I also washed, dried, and straightened my hair before school every morning. My hair was fried and was thinning rapidly. Senior year I had to cut my once long healthy locks to shoulder-length and forbid myself from visiting the salon chair for a new color. This started the process of trying everything under the sun to get my long hair back.

This hair journey started with vitamins. I took biotin religiously, and I still do. I honestly feel these make a huge difference. I also tried to cut out heat but had little success. When my hair dries naturally it is a curly/wavy frizzy mess and I hate it. I researched ways to enhance curls and tame frizz but to no avail. I searched for heat-free styling tips and I even tried wrapping my damp hair around long socks before going to bed. This created nice curls but was very uncomfortable to sleep in. I would always resort back to my trusty flat iron.

During this quest for healthy hair, I found that washing your hair every day is unhealthy and that dry shampoo is a Godsend. I started researching the whole not washing your hair idea and I found that there are people who go more than a week without washing their hair. I was so used to having clean hair every day that this idea seemed absolutely crazy. I also had oily hair and by the end of the day I felt like a washing was due, but I thought I could at least try.

I went out and bought my first bottle of dry shampoo and was determined to go a day or two without washing.

I hated it.

The dry shampoo was awful and my hair just felt weighted down and looked gross. So I continued washing. Every day.

After I had given up I started hearing about a dry shampoo everyone loved and I decided to give the idea one more try. I am so glad I did. Since this discovery, I have been training my hair to go longer in between washes. My hair used to be so oily I thought I was one of those people who is just cursed with bad hair, but the less I wash it, the less oily it gets. Don't get me wrong this took some time and was a little gross at first but it has been well worth it.

I now wash my hair on Sundays and style it for the week. Yep, I only wash my hair on Sundays unless it just gets gross for some reason during the week. Not only does my hair thank me but my love for sleep does too. It takes me wayyy less time in the mornings to get ready and my hair is now halfway down my back and much healthier.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
