You’ve probably seen the articles with titles like “Nike Shorts And A T-Shirt Is The Ugliest Outfit Ever.” They go on and on about how it looks unprofessional, or how it looks ugly, or how you can’t dress that way in the real world.
This may come as a shock to some, but most women don’t care about what you think about their appearance. I know. Shocking. Every time and article like this comes out, it gets the same response: we don’t do this for you. Yet, somehow, so many men still fail to understand the idea that women don’t get ready in the morning to please them.
So, let me just lay it out plainly: I don’t wake up every day and think, “what outfit is going to please any man that I walk past today?” This also goes for the idea that women wear makeup for men, as well. Do you really think that I bought all of the Urban Decay Naked pallets to please men? I could not care less if a man doesn’t like the fact that I wear makeup or not. I buy clothes and makeup that I like. Why would I care what someone who wears the same khaki shorts and Polo shirt combo three times a week has to say about it?
Also: the way I dress when running to the grocery store, going to class, or taking out the trash has no reflection on the way I dress professionally. Because, surprise, I own more than just Nike shorts and t-shirts! I have different clothes for different occasions, which is more than I can say for a lot of guys that I know.
When I’m in class, I’m not worried about looking cute or professional. Most days I don’t even wear makeup to class. I’m not there to impress people with my looks; I’m there to impress people with my mind. I want to be as comfortable as possible so that all of my focus can be on my education. I don’t have time to worry about my outfit every day. Some days, if I wake up early and have the time, I will put more of an effort into my appearance, maybe even wear a nicer outfit. But more often than not, you will see me in some combination of athletic wear and baggy t-shirts.
The most frustrating part about all of this is that you wont see anyone telling guys my age how to dress. My boyfriend, my brother, and most of my male classmates wear gym shorts and t-shirts almost every day, but I can guarantee that none of them will ever be told that their outfit is “ugly” or “unprofessional.” If you are going to hold women to a higher standard, you need to hold men to that same standard. Otherwise, sit down and get out of my way.
